Context: This is what I have...

    Intel i7-2600 CPU @ 3.4 GHz - 8 GB of RAM - Windows 7 Professional 64 bit

    Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2015
    Version 14.0.24720.00 Update 1
    Microsoft .NET Framework
    Version 4.6.01055

I used a stopwatch to time how long it takes from the moment the splash appears to the moment it disappears and the main window appears... 4 Minutes 45 Seconds !!! Any ideas why this is taking so long?

What kind of hard drive? Have you watched task manager while the startup is taking place to see what's consuming resources?

The difficult we do right away... ...the impossible takes slightly longer.

Thanks for the response. My hard drive is a:

        Western Digital WD Green WD20EARS
        2TB
        64MB Cache
        SATA 3.0Gb/s

Using resource monitor it the system idle process hovers between 91 and 97%. ``devenv.exe`` has 22 threads active which seems weird. ``MsMpEng.exe`` (my only AV) gets excited at start-up but settles down quite nicely after 20 seconds or so. Here's the Installed Products information from About. Wondering if this might have something to do with it.

Try starting Visual Studio with the "/Log" parameter: /Log (devenv.exe)[^] That will generate an XML file with detailed information about everything VS is doing.

Did you try resetting your Visual Studio? Start Visual Studio by passing reset as parameter.

That's pretty fast compared to the time it took on my old machine - around 7 minutes. I used to start it up in the morning and then go and have a shower. I then had a new machine built. Usually it takes less than a minute but sometimes it will take up to 90 seconds. I think the biggest reason for the decrease is the SSD drive I had installed plus the faster CPU.
