You manipulated the inverse of quote a little bit (and wrongly so): It should be "All the miserable people I know are that way because they are working badly on something they consider important or they have jobs which they consider unimportant." It doesn't state anything about not working. Are all people that are retired considered to be unhappy? Otherwise I like it.

That's a good point, but I wasn't thinking about people who don't have a job. I was thinking more along the lines of someone who really isn't working on anything they themselves consider important but still have the ability to do so.
Aah, yes... Now I get it. Yes, that is very painful. To that I'll add that: Doing work that I know is pointless also causes extreme unhappiness.

This idea is false. I'm retired, not working on a damn thing, and am very happy. OTOH, I think I was happiest when I had my sci-tech advisor job in Iraq, because I was able to do it well, and considered that it might save a soldier, which I believed to be very worthwhile, so yeah, if you must work, then yeah, the premise is true.

I find that when I'm feeling unhappy, it's virtually always because I'm not living up to my own standards and responsibilities.
