Electrons toiling away in their silicon prison cells. Their tortured cries could break you heart... I find it so hard to remain positive with them around.

Well, that's because electrons are always so negative!

Well - for a fixed genre, I'd say seriously blue blues. Stuff where you know the guitar just squeezes like clay to make those sounds. On the other hand, bits of Workingman's Dead and American Beauty can really make the world feel good, too. And - in my current environment, I can have speakers instead of earphones. That, alone is a major plus. On the other hand, I'm currently listening to "My Fair Lady".

Silence mostly as there seems to be an uncanny connection between listening to music and incoming phone calls. How do they know??? When I do listen to music though, it's always prog rock/metal...currently enjoying the latest album by Spock's Beard. :)

Mostly cheesy 80s rock and Electronic music of all kinds (techno, ambient, IDM, trance...) and some talk radio.

            I'd rather be phishing!

I luckily work in a small office and am on my own most of the time, so I listen to mostly 70's, 80's rock, jazz, video game music. I do the odd .net rocks podcast from time to time.

The "music" to Eve Online - works a charm to cut-out the office noise, and there are hours of it.

Most of the time pop, dance, or electronica. Things that make me feel good and alert.

When I'm heads-down coding, I usually listen to a few things depending on my mood. But I don't want the music to have lyrics. To me, that's distracting. I use the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones connected to an iPod nano. 1 - Classical/Symphonic Music I have a play list of primarily tone poem works like Respighi (Pines of Rome, Fountains of Rome, Roman Festivals, Brazilian Impressions...), The Planets (Holst), La Mer (Debussy), Also Sprach Zarathustra (Strauss), some other works like instrumental concertos. A lot that I can just set it and just let it play for hours. 2 - Spa Music from Kohler Water Spa Had this for years since my wife and I visited there in Wisconsin for our 10th anniversary. Loved the music. Bought the CD then. Have used it since. Very relaxing music to block things out. Link[^] 3 - Dixieland Music 4 - Light Instrumental Jazz 5 - Classical Guitar

Total silence, unless I'm working on something that doesn't require any concentration at all--then I may play some music. I actually want to pay attention to the podcasts I subscribe to, so there's no way I can listen to them while working. I don't subscribe to podcasts to provide me with some background noise.

I use an ipod nano as well, so do you leave your phone in the car or somewhere in your Desk to avoid further distraction?

Whatever I feel like... Really just about anything. Currently I listen to quite a bit of experimental and psychedelic (black) metal like Aluk Todolo, New Keepers Of The Water Towers, Oranssi Pazuzu, Ufomammut, Watain... A while ago it was more electronic music, dance, trap, dubstep, but also trip hop and chill out. Sometimes just whatever, bit of jazz, rock, pop, what have you. Also currently on my playlist are Parov Stelar, Neurotech, Ghost, Igorrr, and even Babymetal. I'm not bound to any genre :D

Silence because when I turn music on, someone always starts talking to me.

I may not last forever but the mess I leave behind certainly will.
