Ah yes. because there's nothing in the least bit odd about calling a light that doesn't flash a flashlight!

Precisely!. The term "Torch" was a simplification of the older term "Electric Torch" which was introduced to distinguish them from the original torches (with flames, etc.) that you carried along with your pitchforks. This makes perfect sense. American Electric torches obviously had some connection problems with the early battery systems and kept going on and off and therefore were called "Flashlights". The latter statement has no supporting evidence and is merely a theory as to why this inaccurate name should make any sense at all!

It would be wildly inaccurate to say that baseball is only played in one country. and would have been when the World Series was first played for in 1903. Japan, Australia and New Zealand all had competitive baseball by the end of the 19th Century, for example. The first amateur World Cup of baseball was won by UK in 1938 against USA and 22 countries participated in the 2009 competition. The World Classic, next due to be played in 2017, which incidentally USA! USA!! USA!!! has never actually won (or indeed reached the final), is currently in qualification with the following 16 teams involved hoping for a place against the best 12 teams from the last tournament.

Despite its name, the World Series remains solely the championship of the major-league baseball teams in the United States and Canada, although MLB, its players, and North American media sometimes informally refer to World Series winners as "world champions of baseball".

None. Cities (well, to be more accurate, franchises) compete in the World Series. There will however be players involved from a host of countries other than USA. There are 23 non-US nationalities represented in MLB this year - not quite up to the level of the English Premier League with 58 non-UK, but pretty impressive for what you think is an All-American game!

That doesn't count. In a proper "world" sporting event, you should be restricted to fielding players from your own country. Otherwise, it's less about "which country is the best at this sport", and more about "which country is willing to spend the most money on good players". :)
