HP. Scammers or Incompetents?

Bought a laptop for the boy's birthday. Offer had $100 cashback. Checked the site and there was a link to claim it - expiring 7th April (this was at the beginning of March). Needed Serial Number so left it until after his Birthday (11th March) before claiming. Page had gone. Contacted HP through online chat. Was told there was no cashback offer on that model. They told me to send an SMS to a number that did not seem to exist. They told me that 'it might be an offer from an online shopping site' even though I had told them that the claim page had been available previously. They told me I'd get a call back. I didn't. They continued to fob me off until eventually they sent me an email saying “they will accept your late claim on this occasion”. and they attached the terms and conditions that they wanted me to agree to. In those terms and conditions, it stated at least three times that the claim needed to be received by 7th April (the email was sent 24th March). I did, eventually, receive the payment. I emailed them saying "I have received payment" and went on to ask for an explanation as to why it was impossible to claim, and why they said they accepted my late claim when my claim patently wasn't late according to the T&C they had sent... I also suggested they might like to compensate me for the time I have spent to claim the $100 I received an email from them in response to that email today. Here is the full text of that email...

But did it say 2016?

Amusingly, I did actually check at the time! Yes 2016.
Thought it might be a bit of creative selling using out of date offers.

I _think_ it might be them reducing the change of having to pay out by removing the claim from their site after the las date you can *buy* the product, rather the last date you can *claim* Hoping I suppose that if they make it hard enough people will just give up. Of course, they will by now have spent more than $100 in staff costs just dealing with me! And I will never buy an HP product again. Personally or for my company. I'd sell any HP shares if I were you ;)

Same thing happened to me but in case of Lenovo. The offer site was working but its not accepting the product code. I knew lot of laptop manufactures reject offers if bought online in India. So i bought it from local showroom and they ensured that offer will be applicable on that laptop and i will get 3 years warranty. But while registration it does not work. So showroom mangager called Lenovo sales manager and this has been escalated up to AVP of Lenovo of India. Lot of mails sent out and finally they made some backend changes to accept my Laptop product code. And then finally i got my Lenovo 3 year warranty offer. :)
Cheers,

HP haven't been any good for years, at least 20 to 30 by my reckoning. I really dont understand why people keep buying their crap, perhaps they're emulating the title of Stanley Kubrick's last film, Eyes Wide Shut. And don't try telling me that their sales numbers means they are any good. Drop a turd on the footpath next to a sandwich and tell me which is the better food, based on the number of flies. I first used their stuff in about 81 or 82 and it was great - top notch stuff back then. Even then, what I used was an older model, the $795, 1974 model HP-65 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[^] Agillient CROs are the best thing to have been associated with them for a long time.

But did they specify 2016 in the Gregorian calendar?
