SOLVED :: Customer needs to send 1GB... what free tool would you recommend?

For the last FTP server I managed (using FileZilla) I still remember having two pages of screenshots and step-by-step instructions which were super-easy to follow (in fact it was impossible to miss if they followed the steps). But you all know how this ended... depending on the customer profile accessing an FTP server is out of reach. I was supper happy with it: you knew always the state of the transfers... but now it is not on consideration.

I solved this by adding ftp functions in the software itself. My clients simply have to browse to a file and click a button. If all else fails, get on a quick remote desktop and do it for 'em through windows. :laugh:

OLD QUESTION: I do have Google drive here, but the customer doesn't. The customer is not tech savvy and he won't spend a € on a software solution to send that file. What free and easy-to-use software would you recommend? Even better if we don't have to install anything... I have thought on setting up an ftp server which would be easy for me but not easy for the customer. What would you use/do? Thank you very much!

We (the "DAO" in Chinese, see the insider news ;) ) developed a system called 1-NET that can do large file transfers in P2P or distributed relay mode. It is in public test mode now. Anybody here is welcome to try and we would like to thank any kind of feedbacks. For your use case, it would be better to use the desktop version of the client that can be downloaded here[^]. Ihe transfer is P2P based and is capable of resuming. All one needed is register an account and all his/her endpoints becomes connectable to each other after logged into the same account...

Sounds good, but I've already recommended them to use google drive or wetransfer (as previous recommendations pointed to them) but thank you, I'll keep an eye on it. :thumbsup:

FTP, copy a link to it and include the link in an email. Most browsers can directly download from FTP. You can even include username/password in the link, however, I'd most likely just add the file into an anonymous readable folder on the server. Of course some of the cloud storage servers also has anonymous downloads. As far as I remember Google Drive is one of them that don't, but this is my major reason for still sticking with DropBox and Box - at least the recipient isn't "forced" to subscribe. Though they are bombarded by an add page when they click that link ... nope FTP and nothing else is as easy for the recipient and yourself as the sender. You could add a HTTP download if you've got access to a web site, but that's more work on your side and not at all easier for the recipient than a FTP link. And then depending on bandwidth normal snail-mail may actually be faster. Probably not with 1GB, but when you're nipping at the 1TB mark I'd definitely look into sending a disc by post / courier.

Have the customer sign up for a free Google account and *poof* - they too will have Google Drive. If they have some paranoid Google fear - use DropBox.

Buy a Flash drive Encrypt the data and send it using FedEX.

Hello. I do not use Drive but Onedrive requires that you login to edit a folder or file. In Onedrive, unlike Drive, the buttons show up when you open the shared link but, when you press one of the buttons, it asks for a login. Maybe they do this to prevent gigantic anonymous uploads that would exceed the account limit.

At the end the customer has used Google Drive (he has installed it in his computer) but this was already mentioned and looked by far the best option. :thumbsup:

I've even tried it locally with my google user logged in without luck. It can be a bug a problem on their servers or myself, but nothing worked... I think onedrive was easier to work with. But it's been a long time since it's last use here... Thank you for posting! :thumbsup:
