Am I wrong in thinking that....

A while ago I received a direct (i.e. not on the cp article forum) email from someone who had read an article of mine here on CodeProject and they had some questions about doing something similar for their own work. I helped them as best as I could, but it quickly became apparent that the person needed to learn the basics before they could even start to work on the task they wanted to accomplish as they kept asking questions about the most basic parts of the code in the article that had nothing to do with the actual subject of the article. I encouraged them to post their questions on CP each time and then about once a week since they have been emailing me with other questions, un-related to my article and general how to stuff. I come to CP and answer questions when I can in my spare time. I'm happy to answer any questions about my articles and help people with them as well as answer questions I know the answer to in forums because I know that when it's on the site it will benefit many more people potentially than one person. I've told this person this before to no avail. This guy is not rude or anything, he just doesn't seem to be taking the hints. Do any of you get this kind of thing happening, and what do you do? Am I wrong in getting pissed off about this?

I am not even a guru - far from it when compared to guys like Mike Dunn, CG (for GDI, STL stuff), Joaq etc... yet I end up receiving 5-10 emails every day asking for help. Some of them quite rudely attach zipped projects. The majority of these requests have absolutely no connection whatsoever with any articles I might have. The only thing I can do is to shift-del them. The number of such requests is too much for me to send out individual mails redirecting them to the forums. Thats what I'd advise you to do too. Just delete the mails. Then you wont get so frustrated when they keep mailing you repeatedly. Nish

The simplest thing is not to answer at all. Believe it or not, if you reply and tell the person to post on Cp instead, chances are it will be regarded as an insult. So it's my experience you are better off not replying at all.

That gives me a cool idea, how about a TOP snippet of the month competition (no prizes, just respect) where anyone can submit some really neat code snippet you coded that month, then the editors (or us) can decide which is the best. Now that would be neat :) I rated this article 2 by mistake. It deserves more. I wanted to get to the second page... - vjedlicka 3:33 25 Nov '02

You could always answer them one last question and then at bottom of it write that you can answer any additional questions they have through a personal consultant service or any other contract work for a small fee. A question on the article seems fine but what you describe starts to sound like they may be taking advantage of you.

Even I, crap coder that I am, get these emails. I try to help, and often surprise myself by being able to spot problems in code I wouldn't feel able to create myself, but it can get frustrating when they latch on to me as some kind of guru.
