When I run it, it tells me it's already installed. yet I can't find it anywhere on my PC.

If it's not broken, fix it until it is

That usually means that it was there but has been unistalled. And the uninstall left some information in the registry. You could use regedit to find it.

My son wants to make a Lego video and post it on YouTube. I can't get Movie Maker to run. My PC says it's there, but it's not. Can anyone recommend a simple, free, video app? Thanks

For basic editing, I've found PowerDirector to be really good. They used to have a demo version.

What OS do you have? Movie Maker doesn't ship with Windows 10 anymore but you can download it from Microsoft. I have looked at a lot of free or lite versions of such tools. Movie Maker is the only free tool I know that is really easy to use and has plenty of features. A lot of the free tools are very limited or you need to buy the codec (VideoSpin). Personally I started using LightWorks but I don't have enough experience to give any recommendation on it. Recently I used Camtasia. The trial version allows you to use it for 30 days free of charge and I liked it a lot. Have you searched for "Stop motion software" as well? If your son want's to do a Lego movie, this sounds more like a stop motion project. Maybe here it is something : Animation Software Reviews, Best Stop Motion Animation Software[^]

I did an extensive search for something free a couple years ago, and ended up just paying the $79 for Adobe Premiere Elements. It's well worth the cost.

Camtasia all the way. Yes it's £200 or so. but just use the trail and take it from there. It really is super simple to use and you can get great results. With direct upload to youtube too..

The easiest tool is Jing from Techsmith, makers of Camtasia. And it is free. Choose capture, and then select the area of the screen, click video capture, and it counts down, turns on the mic, and go. Only up to 5 minutes, I believe per clip. But really easy. And you can preview it before you upload it, etc.

You could use the command line options of the installer to force a re-install. Most support that, and most don't support the /help option, so you have to do a trivial google search to find out their command line options. Or just install something else. It all depends on which thing you want to learn today.

I agree. I use it for making training videos and personal needs. I love it and gladly paid for the recent version after using it 5 years earlier. It just got better.

On my Windows 8 64 bit Movie Maker is in: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\MovieMaker.exe" I note that I had to look for a MovieMaker project on my computer and open it, then search for the executing MovieMaker file in task manager and ask it to open the containing directory in order to find it. If you don't mind attempting simultaneous interface deciphering and mental health analysis, you can attempt to use MS Expression Encoder: [^] I installed Encoder in July 2015 and somehow made it work as a step recorder. I can't guarantee MS will not now attempt to install Windows 10 on your system if you visit the above link, or that it is the same version I obtained last year: file version 4.0.4276.0 (the installer) Microsoft Expression Encoder 4. Have you heard of the top secret testing of the Microsoft Self-Driving Car? Reportedly they are having trouble hiring test drivers after several drivers were hit in the groin by the door when they approached the car and put a hand out towards the door handle, then they found themselves inside and unable to get out again (everytime they reached for the "open door" tile on the dash screen the tile disappeared)...when they finally were removed from the car, they found their credit cards had been taken from their wallets somehow.
