What do you do after...

Are you sure it is not just part of growing up? What age did the change occur? I have seen plenty of Indians with dark lips, not ugly IMO.

Yeah pretty sure. I started smoking at the age of 20-21, I think. I am now 27. I quit a few months ago, don't remember exactly when, but it's been a few months. The change occured gradually, without me noticing it. But after a couple of years, people (those who knew me closely enough to notice) started asking me about my lips. Anyway... I think it's a lost cause now, my lips that is. :)

...you quit smoking? I used to smoke a lot earlier. But I have quit since the past several months. But in my days as a smoker, my lips turned purple. After so many months, they are still the same colour. Will they ever become pink again? Or am I now doomed for ever? Is there anything I can do about it? Does anyone have this kind of experience? Or should I go see a specialist about it? Should I trust this issue to a nutcase who chose to specialise in improving the lip colour of ex-smokers as his career?

- Mother TeresaI've been smoking for 16 or so years, and my lips aren't abnormally dark, nor do I notice this on other people I know who have been smoking for many years. It could be the tobacco or any of a number of other additives in the tobacco, that doesn't exist here in the US. Perhaps its some type of allergic reaction. But then I'd expect it to have gone away. Maybe you just have funny lips, Rohit! ;P BW "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." - Bertrand Russell

But if there is a chance of starting again even after a whole year, I had better be careful. brianwelsch wrote: Congrats on your success with quitting though. Thanks. Yes, yes, whatever it is, it's not betel leaves. Indians chew betel leaves a lot, and the "dye" is actually red and goes away easily after you wash your mouth.

- Mother Teresa:-D Just yanking your chain... I've been smoking for 30+ years, and whatever else it's done to me darkening the lips is not among them. If it really concerns you, I'd recommend mentioning it to your doctor. There could be some circulatory things going on there if it's not just a natural effect of growing older. Having read a bit about betel leaves, I wonder if it will grow here in the desert? I think it might be a dandy cash crop without making the cops curious!:-D "Please don't put cigarette butts in the urinal. Yes, I think I'll talk to my doctor about it after all. He might be able to come up with something better than programmers. I don't know how betel leaves are grown so I can't say anything about that. You could give it a try though. :-D

There seem to be services about that offer lip bleaching, however it occurs to me they *may* actually mean the hair above the lips get bleached. Something you might also try would be leeches... I have no idea whether this would work or not, but walking around with leeches hanging from your mouth sounds like a good time, so you may wanna just give it a try.
