It does seem a bit ironic. :-\

I'm pretty sure the licensing authority differentiates between certified time and time with someone who's been certified. :-\

3000 hours? By heck! That's 375 days at 8 hours/day, so a five day week will make it the best part of a year and a half. Does she get paid for the Internship (because I understand they rarely paid positions in the US?)

I had suggested a remedy for that:   change the setup in the hospital: the residents and interns work for tips. An alternative would be to have the MD's pay for their services out of pocket on an a la carte basis - or do the work themselves.

In the US a Medical Internship (which I'm assuming is what she'll be doing) is indeed a paid position. The internships of the non-paid variety are usually of the "summer internship for college students" type, and generally last a few months. That's been my experience at least.

That is true, and many of the "college internships" have some stipend, too.

The unpaid sort are running into problems in general in the US. By law employers aren't allowed to gain any actual work product from an unpaid intern; it needs to be a pure training position. Historically there's been an element of that being honored only in the breach; but over the last few years the Department of Labor's added it to the list of things they're collecting heads over.
