Not sure if this has been discussed lately (lots of noise from all the Microsoft haters), but you can still get Windows 10 as an upgrade for free. I just purchased a refurbished laptop that came with Windows 7. I downloaded the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool[^], ran it and chose Upgrade to Windows 10. Very fast, very simple. No problems. 3rd upgrade I've done and not a single problem yet.

There are only 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Also worked for me 2 weeks ago when I installed from the installer USB and selected Windows 10 Professional x64 with no key, then when I booted in to Windows 10 entered a Windows 7 Professional key from the sticker on the side and it activated with no issues.

A lot of OEM machines were pre-registered in the Microsoft database, so you can update them to 10 even now...

I love MS but my laptops are still running on Windows 7 and 8.1. I don't want to [^crash] in the middle of my development :-\

It has worked since the 1511 release last November.
