Buy a new keyboard? Installing it may require that you take the notebook apart, but usually is just a matter of getting the old one out without damaging anything else and getting in the connection cable the right way.

That's the hardware way. A software guy simply writes a small tray icon app that when clicked will use Sendkeys to send an arrow up keystroke. Much easier and cheaper! Elegant solution... (and there's a CP article in it as well) Or perhaps rewire Arrow up to another, less used key - I suggest "¤"...

I are sad, look -> :sigh: The up cursor key on my lappie appears to be deaded. Well if not deaded, at least deading. It works intermittently but is causing me endless pains. As a temporary measure, I have had to switch off the number pad, which I do use, so I can have cursor keys for when I'm coding; an activity i am being paid to do for a change. If anyone has any hints or tips short of 'buy a new machine' then I'd be most greatfull.

In the old days I would simply have replaced the defective key switch. Five minutes of work.

Well, IF you're a teeeensy bit clumsy and happens to spray graphite all over the keyboard, or worse your computer, it's dead. This info was brought to you by Capt. Obvious

Call up the vendor and get a keyboard. Keyboards in laptops now-a-days are pretty easily swapped out. Some are just four to six screws in the bottom of the machine, others have "locks" hidden in the keys that you move or twist to unlock the keyboard to take it out. Just be careful of the ribbon cable connecting to the keyboard to the motherboard. Those are usually short cables so don't go ripping the board out once it's released. Those cables are usually plugged into ZIF connectors. Carefully open that connector and you should be good to go. There's really not much to it.

Careful there. Not all keyboards come out with a few screws. My wife has a Samsung laptop - she wore the keyboard out. "No problem dear. I'll have that keyboard swapped out in a jiffy." Whoever the manufacturing engineer is that designed the assembly I hope devils are dancing on your grave. Those stupid arses WELDED their keyboard into place. To save a couple of screws, every plastic post that anchored the keyboard was melted to a lump. I have never seen such stupidity. Anyway, 20 minutes Dremeling took care of that issue.
