We have an official set of CP comments for that class of help request. These are used as links for the answers. One I would appreciate on this hoped-for list: You cannot use your smartphone to write proper code - it cannot make up for you being stupid.

I agree. Beginning developers should already know how to code.

At least be able to look up syntax, read documentation, and some basics like looping, branching and testing. Without that knowledge one is merely begging for the right words to "insert" into the existing code. Imagine your surgeons being trained like developers.

The number of times I've want to post an answer like "Why don't you try a career in aged care rather than programming"...

Cheers, Mick ------------------------------------------------ It doesn't matter how often or hard you fall on your arse, eventually you'll roll over and land on your feet.

I got reported for being abusive because I told one person that they should box up their computer and take it back to the store and get a refund. Of course, that was only slightly better than the one guy that was asking how to do his final year project, him I told to go to the registrars office and see if he could get a refund on his college education because clearly he learned nothing there. Libs didn't like that one either.

I think some people come here brand new, they don't even have that yet. They still deserve respect and help.

Yeah some people can't handle reality. One guy posted some whining yesterday because he asked if some code he found would fulfill the requirements of his homework assignment. I told him to try himself, and that is all I said, and find out himself and he didn't like that. He wanted someone here to waste their time checking his homework assignment for him so he wouldn't have to. I guess "try it yourself" is insulting to a number of people.

Respect, yes; but it would be quite the effort to convey all the beginning-concepts to someone who is writing the next FaceBook. It is also no longer "a question", but rather a "plea for help". The site focuses on questions, not on introducing concepts to people who never touched a computer.

I am not sure if to laugh.Show() or else to cry.Show()... maybe both, but that can't be written..

I had to train my (lovably) girlfriend for the programming classes (she came from an entirely different background and was studying for a barely related degree) and even she, a normally thick skinned person, took offence at "try it yourself". Many people just don't get that programming, like writing, painting, playing instruments, fixing stuff, shooting, fighting, speaking a language, etc can only be improved by experience and time. Try it, fail it, try again, bang your head, curse, hate it, try again... until you either give up or are expert enough to navigate out of most situations.
