Over on insider news, Kent posted this: New Zealand will pay for your holiday if you agree to a job interview in Wellington[^] Out of curiosity, I did some searching and found that tech salaries in New Zealand are relatively low [EDIT: specifically in Wellington], at least as reported on various sites. Is New Zealand having trouble attracting talent? If so, wouldn't offering more money be helpful?

More money does not equate to better talent. Edit: More money would not make me move to NZ to work there or live there. That is not saying that NZ is bad, or not one of the most beautiful countries on planet earth. :)

I have heard that Auckland for instance has extremely high property values and is very expensive; so even more money may not mean much. I'd love to work and live in Silicon Valley, but I would not be able to afford living there if my salary is not much more than what it is now.

Relative to what? Salaries in the Netherlands are low compared to salaries in the USA, but we get (near) free healthcare and social benefits in return. My salary is relatively low compared to someone who works in a city, but the price of my house and commute is relatively low compared to that in the city. And in the end it somehow works out :)

From what I've read, the cost of living in Wellington is about that of Los Angeles and taxes are higher. Yet, the average tech salary (correctly adjusted for exchange rates) seems to be about 70% that of the LA area. (I keep using seems since from my own experience, what is reported as average or even a range and what companies are actually offering are sometimes quite different. Hence one reason for my original post.)

"It can't be worse than LA" OTOH, I'm ten years out from retirement and maximizing income is more important than where I live. PS. Well, yes it can be; it could be Chicago or New York City, both of which I loathe. And for all of LA's problems, the weather is decent and the temperature remains above freezing.

Cost of Living in Wellington is about the same as Los Angeles. In other words, not cheap.

How you get the money is more important that how much you got. Living in a soul-grinder like LA isn't worth the benefit if you come out of it a hollow shell of a human, albeit one that didn't get cold! I agree on NYC - a different type of hell hole - but Chicago is better (in my limited experience) than, say Detroit. But then, I would say that: I live in the Welsh Valleys, where pay is low but the air is breathable!

Property in Auckland is expensive, $1 million is the number floated by media as the average house price. Auckland is also a sprawling city, where commute times can be an hour or two if there's no accidents or hold ups depending on home/work locations. I live and work in Lower Hutt, just north or Wellington, things are much more affordable and travel times are way less, however we're catching Auckland if you believe the media again. www.trademe.co.nz is pretty much the nz goto website for jobs, property and pretty much anything.

Yes and No. New Zealand has had a lot of growth throughout the country and generally there is a shortage of skilled people in certain occupations in all areas. In a small market like NZ, it is easier to look overseas rather than trying to compete for limited internal sources. Living in NZ is mostly about the lifestyle and not the money. If money is your major driver then I dont think NZ is for you. Some thing are expensive in NZ (due to our isolation) and some thing are fairly cheap. When comparing salaries to other country is always inaccurate unless you factor in all the other aspects. (eg I have worked my whole life for public Companies with no hand out from anyone, yet own my own country retreat lifestyle block and a new beach house and no debt). Materialistically I have everything I want or need so money is not a driver for me anymore. If you a big city person then NZ is quite limited, but if you prefer a smaller quietier City / Town then you will be better off if they are close to the main cities where you get big city salaries for small town costs. NZ has lot of migrants and generally they come for the lifestyle. Some find the isolation a bit of a challenge because they are so far away from families and friends. When all said its horse for courses. The same could probably said about New Zealands West Island (Australia for the geographically challenged)
