I just rode a bicycle for the first time in 8 years today. I figured it wouldn't be too bad since I run ~5 miles a week but I only made it about 1/4 mile before I had to stop. My legs are really sore now. I had no idea I was in such poor shape. Anybody else experience something similar lately? Brad Jennings "You're mom is nice. Use a lower gear so that you can spin the pedals around without using much force.

I stopped doing 250 - 300 miles a week about 1 1/2 years ago. And haven't exactly ridden since. You should do a 100 miles in one day, wake up the next morning and go into work. (trust me on the hurt thing) On the lighter side of Bicycles: I quit the Pro Shop where I was working today. Threw the key at the owner and walked out. That makes 4 of us that have left, he's all alone now.

How do you mean sore? Muscle pain or is the skin bruised? If it's bruised, then you should definately get better bicycling pants. If you're doing longer distances (60+ miles), grease them up too. Also, make sure the saddle is at the right height. If you're rocking on it left and right all the time, expect major hurtage in the glockenspiel area. If the saddle is too low, you'll wear yourself out in no time. As we humans are unique, it's hard to say what height is the best. A good base to work on however is put the saddle on a height where you can touch the ground flat with your feet when you sit on the saddle. Then raise the saddle half an inch or something. Then work from there.. :) And yes, as others in threads above pointed out, running muscles != bicycling muscles. You'll just have to start in a low tempo and work yourself up. It won't take long to get into a decent shape though. The biggest problem are the 100 mile rides. How do you motivate yourself when you know your legs and ass will hurt like hell the day after? As soon as the temperature rises to acceptable levels here (20C or something) I'll fix my racer (new tyres and basic equipment check). I still haven't made the 100+ mile trip to my moms place yet. It's way over due.. :/ So, why the sudden urge for riding bicycles? Are you aiming to take over when Lance Armstrong quits? :-D -- I was quite impressed until I hit the floor Isn't that what friends are for? Pain looks great on other people That's what they're for

Yeah, that's probably what part of the problem was. Only the gears in the rear worked so the one in the front was stuck on the middle one.:) Brad Jennings "You're mom is nice. Mind if I go out with her?" - Jörgen Sigvardsson

Are you aiming to take over when Lance Armstrong quits? Eh, my brother took my car this weekend. One of my friends rode his bike to my house and we decided to go lift weights so I borrowed my roommate's bike. Needless to say, I was so wore out by the time we got to the gym I was glad that it was closed.:) Brad Jennings "You're mom is nice. Mind if I go out with her?" - Jörgen Sigvardsson

You can either start right away on the jeep trail which is pretty easy going, or take the stairs and cut out a big chunk of the swooping trail. I remembered back when I was 18 that my friends and I easily ran up those stairs and then jogged the rest of the trail. No more than quarter the way up the stairs I put my camera kit down, put my hands on my knees and leant against a tree; Remind me again that I am not 18 anymore and have a desk job. :-D As I was standing there waiting for the burning to subside a young lass runs past me up the stairs, I felt rather humbled. Saying that though I pushed on and after awhile the pain just becomes numbness and it is not so bad. So push through that barrier (and get your cycle gears fixed :) )

I think I did pretty good riding since it was the first time I'd ever ridden a bike with gears and handle brakes (I'm a lot more used to riding BMX style bikes). As for my physical conditioning, it's a lot harder for me to exert myself (especially my legs) than it was it high school. This weekend was a wake up call to get outside more often.:) Brad Jennings "You're mom is nice. Mind if I go out with her?" - Jörgen Sigvardsson
