I was merrily typing into Chrome, and both monitors went off. Then blinked, then off, then back again. Only ... Chrome has switched monitors, and so has my task bar, and all open windows had messed up size and positions. Almost as if Windows 10 had updated itself without asking (now there is a surprise) but without any update alerts in the notifications area. Most odd. Any body else seen this? Often enough, when Windows has a seizure and resets the settings of your monitors / the resolution / the primary screen for the desktop. Despite the negative bugs covfefe.

Me! Currently my 2nd monitor is turned off as the desktop keeps alternating between on and a black screen. Window 7 Ultimate, and in my case not related to Chrome as its not installed.

I had this kind of behavior after installing new graphics drivers. Sometimes the settings for the dektop and/or the resolution was changed or set back to older settings.

no doubt ms will blame it on (1) chrome, (2) changing ANY settings from win10 defaults, (3) goto 1.

I think this happens when somehow an unsupported resolution is set. Then the blinking starts, windows notices that there's something wrong and tries to recover by using older 'safe' settings.

Check your cables. Could be one of your screens momentarily disconnected. Windows then tries to "adjust" as best as it can. It does mess up from time to time. On my work laptop I currently have 7 screens according to windows (In reality I only have 3 if I count the laptop screen itself)... And disconnecting them seems to only confuse windows into thinking they are still there. It's annoying as hell, cause everything then opens on my second screen that isn't there... At home I'v never had any problems with it though and there I have 4 screens, if I disconnect one windows instantly goes to another configuration, connect it again and it goes back to the original configuration. I guess it depends on window's mood while installing it?

Check Windows Updates. I had the same thing, and it turned out that Windows had installed a new nVidia graphics driver.

Quite often, but I use Windows Surface Pro 3, both at work and home. When docking station (for some Microsoft knows what reason) lost connection with the device, all open windows get scrambled between two monitors.

Same here. A new NVidea driver installed yesterday or the day before. While the driver installed both monitors flashed, but all was well after the installation. I have found that the monitors flash quite often when a new video driver is being installed. I consider this "normal" and it has little to do with Windows.
