At a Monday technology summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly suggested making programming a mandatory subject in the country's schools.
Hopefully not in Objective-C
What a really dumb idea. I taught Programming at a college for two years, and I can tell you there are some folks that are as dumb as a bag of hammers who couldn't get past the intro course. That's just what we need - more inept 'developers' in the mix.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is. Everything makes sense in someone's mind. Ya can't fix stupid.

I actually agree with it. I mean we teach calculus in high school and while that's not required things like geometry are. Computers are taking over the world like it or not. Schools should prepare kids for that. Does it mean our jobs will have to evolve too? Yes. But that's the way it is with every industry that's maturing. What people don't usually realize is devs got in on this at the bleeding edge of a new industry being created. One that is taking over the world. Things will change. Now if we could only teach kids finances.

Schools should prepare kids for that. Does it mean our jobs will have to evolve too? Yes. But that's the way it is with every industry that's maturing. What people don't usually realize is devs got in on this at the bleeding edge of a new industry being created. One that is taking over the world. Things will change. Now if we could only teach kids finances.

On the other hand, you might get some world class developers, who might not have chosen the computer field had it not been for that class that they really didn't want to take.

Like math, foreign language, philosophy,... classes, I rather think it's the exposure that counts. We are surrounded by computers, trying to garner more interest in what makes them tick is, at least to me, a good thing.
