This post is two fold. I have written a distributed application and was getting ready to purchase a series of barebone systems to utilize within my cluster. First point : Well, I have been referencing PriceWatch[^] for sometime now, getting the cheapest prices for the systems. Just recently, they have taken off the category "PC Kits" (a.k.a. barebone systems). Has anyone else noticed this? Second Point : So this leaves me in the dark as to where to purchase these systems. Any ideas? The last time I looked there was a company selling AMD 2000+'s barebone system for $100 a piece, but it was only available to Pricewatch customers. :( Jim QTExtender - The OFFICIAL addon for QuoteTracker.

Im looking at doing something similar but over here in oz. The cheapest I can get a resonably bare bone system is $400 USD :-( Which unfortunately I thought was quite good till I saw your post :-) One question I do have though, what is your opinion of spending more on hardware to get dual pc systems vs spending the money on the software to run on two pcs (i want to setup a win2k cluster). ie is it better to scale up or out? Andy

In regards to the pricing, that still was a system without a hard drive and memory. The systems that were advertised had integrated video, audio, and NIC card, so I was looking at a little over $200 for an AMD 1800+ basic system with 256 mb RAM, and a 40 gig drive (without monitor). In regards to the costs of a dual processor systems versus single cpu systems, it really depends upong architecture. After looking at the dual processer combos, it was pretty obvious that two single processor machines was more cost effective. Because the tests that my system performs are largely independent of each other, I can get away with a bunch of really cheap single cpu machines with a simple 100mb lan connection. If you had designed a system that was tightly coupled because the tests were heavily interdependent, then its appropriate to pursue a multiprocessor machine. $89[^] at TigerDirect for a Soyo barebones kit w/ Video and Audio built in, + a power supply. But no CPU.

For instance, $84 for an AMD 2000+/Biostar/fan combo at Accubyte.[^] If you can find a cheap case, you're set. Now I'm reduced to shopping for the CPU/mobo combo, and then the case instead of buying them all together, which usually saves me a few bucks. Ugh, I already sent PriceWatch a letter asking why they removed this category, but I bet I don't get a response. :( Jim QTExtender - The OFFICIAL addon for QuoteTracker.
