I used to be an AMD guy but I stopped buying them after I switch over to Intel. They are comparable processors but Intel drivers and motherboards have been far more stable for me. Not to mention a whole lot easier to work with. And lets not forget to mention NVidia Geforce cards.

Well, it appears my home rig has given up the ghost. Darned motherboard died on me. The bad thing is that it was a LGA 2011 socket that seems to have been abandoned by the hardware industry so no viable replacements. So, what does the community think of the replacement I am planning to build?
Case: Thermaltake Core V71 Full Tower [^] Proc: Intel Core i7-7740X [^] MoBo: Asus Rog Strix X-299-E [^] RAM: 16GB DDR4 2666 (15 CAS LAT) [^] Drive: 2X Intel 600p - 512GB M.2 MVMe [^] (Raid 0)
That's pretty much the core of the system. I will be able to cannibalize an 850 watt PS and GTX 970 from the current rig along with 2 SSDs and 3 spinning disks. Had the motherboard and processor since January of 2014 so it's not like I didn't get my money's worth out of them. I am irritated that I unwittingly chose a dead-end socket and chipset :sigh: Hoping that I am not locking myself into that again with 2066 socket.

I know the processor is still good, i7-3820 quad at 3.6GHz, but I bought a dead-end socket (LGA 2011). If there were replacement motherboards readily available, I would try to RMA the current board. Since there aren't any that I trust for sale, I have to build a whole new rig. It's not like my current rig is obsolete or anything but might as well upgrade while I have the opportunity.

I had to send the first one back since it was DOA so I am glad that I got three years out of the thing with the replacement they sent me.

I highly recommend this beast[^] of a case. Plenty of room for everything you want to put into a case, including a snack and mini bar.

I still have a few single-threaded games I like to play (e.g. C&C 3) that benefit from the higher core clock. I could overclock the 6 core but I never have been that adventurous with my PC tweaking (overclocking voids the warranty with most chips anyways). I really thought about it since it is currently in some sort of flash sale on newegg for $396 but it was tempting me to buy more RAM. My wallet is NOT bottomless.

Yeah, I was also going to suggest hunting a motherboard down on eBay. I recently upgraded from an LGA775 system with a Core 2 Extreme QX9650 CPU. I thought it was still quite usable, but I needed a system with Hyper-V capability, so I had to move on.

I don't know if you are fully set on the case being a Full Tower, but I recently made a new build for which I spent a long time comparing cases on the web and in the stores. I did look at that Thermaltake case you link to, but the Full Tower chassis are just too big for my taste and needs. It does have a little brother, but I checked it out in a store and it just didn't do it for me. I finally decided on going with the Cooler Master HAF XB EVO (RC-902XB-KKN2)[^] and I am overly satisfied with that choice. It is a very handy case if you need to move it around fairly often (as I do) and you have great access when tinkering with components.

Why raid 0 the ssd's? Please don't say for performance! Also double check your PSU has the right CPU power connectors for these new mobo's. It probably does have them but worth checking first. Oh and 4 years is a massive amount of time for a socket, doubt 2066 will last much longer!
