What can you do with a managed one ? I have no idea what programmable feature would be required on a switch (for me it is just a multiple plug, but for network instead of electricity).

... Or better said... time to buy a switch for my (new) home :) Since I have about zero know how in networks, I thought Codeproject could be the right place to get some advice. So I need about 8 ports, Gbit of course, as less noise as possible. Note : I have a router between the Interweb and this switch. So far, I found something like this: Netgear GS108E-100PES Switch Configurable 8 Ports Gigabit[^] Any (better) ideas ?
I've bought mostly cheap five Port ones and had only one fail, but I also went all spendy for a sixteen Port one a while back, which wasn't too expensive. I think it even has some firewall functionality. I'll have to see what it is when I get home. Amazon tells me it's a NETGEAR ProSafe Ethernet Switch (GS116NA)

A managed one will allow you to create VLANs for example, in case you have a complex architecture with several LAN segments that you want to separate from each other. But, for a personal, home usage, an unmanaged one is quite sufficient. I've used Netgear switches for years, had to change the AC adapter once, but apart from that got no problem with them.

Definitely go with a consumer model like you're looking at, no matter how cheap a used/on sale rackmount one might look. I'll have obnoxiously loud fans, probably with no control since it's designed to go into an oven where they always need to be running.
