Couldn't believe it when I saw that on IOL last night! The thing is, just think how brave you would have to be to do that! Seems to me, once you are that courageous, if you only took a couple of minutes to look around, you would probably have the courage to go on living. Very sad.

Well, if, as he suspected, a large gang of men were after him, who knows what horrible things they had in store once they caught him? He may have seen this as the only way out... ...yeah, ok, it's still bizarre - i'd have gone with the sleeping pills three counters over.

No pics, thankfully, and the articles are not particularly graphic. He apparently did not cut his head clean off.

Richards Bay - A man sawed his head off in full view of staff and customers at a grocery store in the northern KwaZulu-Natal province town of Richard's Bay on Monday afternoon, police said. On a related note, just yesterday a man was seen walking through a small town in Germany, with the head of a young woman in one hand, and a big knife in the other...

 Brave and courageous aren't the words I would use to describe that kind of behaviour. I've always thought suicide (unless it is in the act of saving others) was rather weak and gutless. Mike Mullikin

Don't worry, there are no photographs. Apparently the man went into the butchery section and used the bansaw they use for slicing meat. I don't think his head came off entirely.

Ah, ok, I had this very Monty-Pythonesque vision of someone using a hacksaw to cut his own head off, which, with hindsight was pretty ridiculous. :-O You wouldn't be able to do as you described in my local supermarket as the cutters are protected by safety guards, but I guess they were more concerned with losing fingers than customers' heads. That is pretty extreme. Debbie

I don't think so - Omni had a really good rep for verifying stories. But that guy must have really wanted to die! One thing the account didn't mention was whether he used a hand drill, or a drill press... I wonder which would be harder to do? "Please don't put cigarette butts in the urinal.
