Richards Bay - A man sawed his head off in full view of staff and customers at a grocery store in the northern KwaZulu-Natal province town of Richard's Bay on Monday afternoon, police said. Man cuts off head in shop[^] :omg: Butchery staff traumatised[^] I would freakin' think so. Man cuts off head 'in fear'[^]

Don't worry, there are no photographs. Apparently the man went into the butchery section and used the bansaw they use for slicing meat. I don't think his head came off entirely.

Ah, ok, I had this very Monty-Pythonesque vision of someone using a hacksaw to cut his own head off, which, with hindsight was pretty ridiculous. :-O You wouldn't be able to do as you described in my local supermarket as the cutters are protected by safety guards, but I guess they were more concerned with losing fingers than customers' heads. That is pretty extreme. Debbie

I don't think so - Omni had a really good rep for verifying stories. But that guy must have really wanted to die! One thing the account didn't mention was whether he used a hand drill, or a drill press... I wonder which would be harder to do? "Please don't put cigarette butts in the urinal. Brave and courageous aren't the words I would use to describe that kind of behaviour. I've always thought suicide (unless it is in the act of saving others) was rather weak and gutless. Mike Mullikin

I suspect he was doing trepanation (drilling holes in the skull to aleviate pain in the head), and he made a mistake.

It is entirely weak, man! Someone who's depressed is too weak to turn around and face their problems, and lets the situation they are in take control of them. That's how they get feeling helpless. I've been plenty depressed, and it's always been ME telling myself to get off my ass to change my situation, not someone coddling me telling how damn brave I am. Christ Almighty!! If we'd stop babying everyone for their shortcomings, and instead got them to realize that 'yes, life really fucking sucks sometimes, deal with it', we'd be doing them a big favor. I'm done ranting now. :) carry on. By the by, what does the neuroscience community consider suicide if not a weakness. Bild reported that the man was having an affair with his sister-in-law but she wanted to end it. Well, that explains everything. Aachen is in your neck area of Germany isn't it? BW "I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific." - Lily Tomlin

You should apply for a job with The Samaritans. You'd cut their phone bills in no time at all. Debbie
