Since a payment made by bitcoin is difficult to trace, ransomware attacks become more frequent. The fact that the value of bitcoin has increased quickly in recent years certainly motivates attackers to do more. If people have no interest in bitcoin trade, do you think the attacks can be reduced?

What do you mean by "bitcoin is criminalized" and how would that reduce something that is already a criminal act?

I read it as the OP meaning if bitcoin were not something you and I could actually pay the ransom with (because it has been outlawed) then these types of attacks would be reduced since normal people couldn't pay the ransom.

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who can extrapolate from incomplete data. There are only 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

And that would prevent criminals from wanting money from you? I still don't get it.

Well, if bitcoins weren't worth anything, the attacks would still continue, the method has shown to be profitable. Instead they would demand whatever next hard to track currency is available... like USD sent to a compromised foreign account.

No. Bitcoin is just easier than other ways of payment. Attackers do it because they can, not because method of payment is convenient. There are pre-paid Visa, iTunes cards and several other methods that can and were used before. Mere fact that something CAN be used in malicious way doesn't mean it should be banned... Unless you want to ban all men for example :)

which is basically money? So would you say that because you are not allowed to hold euros the criminal is bothered by that and would instead of still wanting it from you just stop the attack?

Money payment (non-bitcoin) has to go through banks. with all the transaction records available, it is hard to believe that attackers do not get caught.

Have not. But I do have a number of emails asking me to claim huge amount of money left by my deceased great great aunt. Need to act quickly.

Well, if bitcoins weren't worth anything, the attacks would still continue, the method has shown to be profitable. Instead they would demand whatever next hard to track currency is available... like USD sent to a compromised foreign account.

I sometimes wonder how could they not get caught since all transactions go through banks including the foreign account unless that foreign country supports the attackers.
