Does it work like a piece of cake in your car? Reverse gear was a pain in my last car. (Manual transmission) Just in few days of use, I noticed the reverse gear shift doesn't engage in one attempt. I'd have to disengage, move the car by few inches and then try again then, it works. When I raised this issue with the dealer, he said, shifting reverse gears need some "knack" :| and this is how it is! After years of usage, at one point, it became so worse. Then I called to the service department and explained the problem. Well, they came to the point straight. It would need some minor replacement and it might cost $400. What the heck, I've been complaining this right from day one on a brand new car. & I had a different response. I just totally dislike this pattern Something looks like a problem for you from day one & the other party never recognizes it & when the problem gets severe, they suggest a solution straight without looking at the history of this complaints & responses. Okay, I took it easy, I did not go for the $400 replacement, I tweaked up my "knack" for reverse-gear shifts and ensured I live with it Long enough till I sold it back to the same manufacturer. Yup they do exchange customers old cars for new ones. Now, I have a brand new car. Got it after exchanging my old one. It's different model but from the same manufacturer. It's just few weeks old. And now I'm seeing the same problem again. :omg: The reverse gear doesn't engage at first attempt. It takes me to rock the back and forth and try again. :(( :(( . Does reverse gears in this universe work this way? Or I'm just alone here with my curse of the reverse gears? I think I'll have to learn a new "knack" for this car now. WTH!! :wtf:

Reverse gears usually are not synchronized, unlike the forward gears. Your problem sounds perfectly normal.

Among the three different vehicles I have driven, one of them had the same problem you described. That one (2000 Toyota Tacoma) had a reverse gear with straight teeth (the edge of each tooth is straight and parallel to the axle of rotation, also called spur gears) and no synchronizer (It has synchronizer on all other 5 forward gears). It is hard to shift it to reverse sometimes. The straight teeth is obvious because when it is in reverse the sound it makes is quite different from the other gears. I guess it is a little cheaper to make the straight-tooth gears, and we are not driving in reverse a lot so it should not bother too much. By the way, I bought this vehicle brand new in 2000 with only 4 miles on it. The other two vehicles (1993 Ford Ranger and 2011 Chevrolet HHR) don't have this problem. I can put in reverse easily even when the vehicle is slowly moving. All the gears are super smooth. The reverse gear also has the helical gears so it is as quiet as the other (forward) gears. For all these vehicles I don't have to depress the brake pedal to engage the gears. I believe for manual transmission, you don't need to depress the brake pedal to engage gears. My point is it depends on the design of the gear box. You happen to have the one with the reverse gear problem. You may need to double-clutch, or even move the vehicle a bit to engage the reverse. Since you bought a new one again from the same manufacturer you probably have the same type of transmission.

You automatically lose a couple of man points if you don't own a car with a manual transmission. I have no sympathy.

A bit obstinate you are, arent' you? :) It works quite well on my current car (worked quite well on my past ones too). Sometimes the handbrake obstacles reverse gear insertion, however releasing it does the trick.

Lol :) except this problem , everything else is good with Suzuki. So I better live with the known evil. And as I get to read replies from you all here, it doesn't look like an evil too. I just need to learn the trick better.

Its a funny thing, in Europe almost all cars are manual. (In fact the car license is different for an automatic, if you pass on an auto, you cant drive a manual legally)

Reverse gears often don't have synchro so you need to ensure the gears have spun down before you engage. If you're in neutral, you've paused a second or so, and then put it in gear gently it should go in fine. That's what they are designed to do, after all. Sounds like either your gearbox needs some work or you just have a finicky gearbox.

                    cheers Chris Maunder

At one time, an automatic transmission was considered a 'luxury' add-on that was fairly expensive - 10% or more of the vehicle price. Nowadays manual transmission isn't even an option on most vehicles, except for sports cars like the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Mazda Miata, etc. If I have a choice I will always drive a stick. Living in Ohio with the crappy road conditions during the winter, an automatic doesn't give you the control you have with a manual transmission.

I drove manuals in India but since I left, I've been an automatic only guy. The last time I visited India, I did not even drive (not because of the manual issue but because I could not handle the traffic chaos).

Lol yes though I'm aware of the Automatic gears and it's available too here in India, with higher variants. I always felt manual transmission gives me better control. I tried AT once, I felt like something missing in my driving experience. may be I got used to MTs much. Yes in the original post I did not mention it'd AT or MT, initially. As I assumed everyone would take it as MT by default. :)

In just about every manual transmission car I've owned, I've had to double-clutch before shifting into reverse. I was amused when someone noticed that once and said "wow, who taught you that???" It seems to be esoteric knowledge.

Never seen that with the cars I've driven... I drive 4 different cars in a normal basis and I've rented a lot of cars... None of them has the problems you depict. In the worst case and only some times, the gear is not getting in at first attempt. Just removing the gear, releasing the clutch and pressing it again to put the gear again works...

Don't recall ever having had the slightest problem selecting reverse in any car in the past 30 years (all manual). I don't recall anyone else ever mentioning a problem, either. (Here in the UK where almost everyone drives a manual transmission). If you buy something and it doesn't work properly, then take it back and get a refund.
