In no particular order: Serenity (ok, this and Forbidden Planet are my joint number one) Stargate 5th Element Silent Running The Man from Earth Idiocracy The Andromeda Strain Oblivion Dawn of the Dead (best Zombie film - EVER!) Terminator I and II Metropolis Planet of the Apes (original) Forbidden Planet 2001 The Matrix Star Wars - A New Hope Blade Runner The Thing (with Kurt Russel) The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) RoboCop (1987) Alien Total Recall (1990) Predator They Live Escape from New York Galaxy Quest Star Trek: First Contact A Clockwork Orange District 9 Ex Machina Back to the Future SpaceBalls 28 Days Later Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan Capricorn One Soylent Green The Omega Man Moon Pitch Black Phew! That feels better. Any to add to the list?

+5 for explaining it in context to the times. You're right with it being 1951 that makes sense.

A lot of movies have to be taken in their proper context to make sense. Over time, I've grown to appreciate movies that are older than I am (so it's not nostalgia), and remakes often stop making sense and instead exist only to showcase special effects.

Existenz - ok it's Cronenberg so it's bound to be a bit yucky in parts, however I thought the ideas and story line were done well and it's layers within layers are interesting. TimeCrimes - perhaps the best time travelling movie I have seen where everything actually hangs together and makes sense. The Man From Earth - like Gattaca its more like a play than a movie. The movie is a long conversation between a group of friends, one of whom has an interesting secret they reveal within the movie. The interesting part is seeing how people respond to what he reveals. Avalon - a Polish Japanese collaborative film about a distopian future and a VR game. Stalker - ok it's long and boring, actually no it's not! It's a brilliant film!

One of the all-time worst movies ever. I recently watched it for the first time and I couldn't believe the end was like, "Humans, don't nuke each other." What!?! I watched 93 minutes of this crap so you could lecture me at the end?! X| Yes, it's a good idea not to nuke each other. Thanks. And pick up all your trash too. PS - Just trying to create some controversy for discussion but I'm serious about it being the worst.

By today's standards yes it's pretty poor, especially that scene where Klatu picks up the girl and she screams and faints. But ... when I first saw it in 1950 something I did think it was brilliant.
