Animal rights

Maybe you should start by citing where PETA think animals should have the same rights as humans, there's no point discussing a straw-man argument after all.

I think you're taking this WAYYYYYYYYYY too literal. PETA does not believe that animals should have the right to carry guns, drive a car, or get a library card.

So you admit the premise you want to discuss is false? Then why waste time discussing it? It would be like me saying "Let's discuss why the grass is blue and the sky is green...."

Animals don't have rights per se, but humans can reason, and act on that reasoning. Therefore, it is incumbent on humans to treat animals humanely. Even if a given society consumes various animals as a food source, they should still act humanely towards the animals they consume, simply because humans have the capacity for humane treatment.

Although I agree, that is not PETA's reasoning. But, again, why treat animals humanely, but not insects or plants. Why the distinction?

I didn't make the distinction. You limited the conversation by explicitly mentioning "animals". If you also wanted to include plants and insects in the discussion, you should have said so.

I could google it, but I'd prefer to have a discussion to help me learn something. So, PETA and others believe animals should have the same rights as humans. But on what basis? Just because they are also living creatures? But then that would extend to plants and insects as well. I asked the other day but did not get an answer so I wonder if anyone is a PETA supporter or knows the answer.

PETA is a political lobbying group and its source of funding is based on treating certain animals in a certain way. They can only continue their influence (and income) by focusing on animals that people care about. It is calculated and refined to keep money coming in, nothing more. I knew a lady who worked at a big PETA office in Norfolk, VA. Many of the employees there eat meat and care nothing for PETA's values. It is just a job, a source of income, and political influence. They don't care about bugs (like mosquitoes and spiders), they don't care for plant's rights, and they probably don't care much for anything else either - except their income.

"Human rights" is a very nebulous term for me. Take the "human right" of having a shelter - well there are plenty of people on the streets who are not having that right fulfilled. How about the right to clean drinking water - again there are millions of people who are having that right violated. Freedom? Well there are plenty of people in prisons who have their freedom's limited in order to protect others It's a useful term for opening up a dialogue but without being specific it has little meaning to me. Whereas responsibilities do have meaning and value to me - so I have a responsibility of treating others well, of not destroying life capriciously, of helping others if I have the capacity to do so among many responsibilities I have.

Cite where PETA's views on insects differ from "non-pest" animals? This is just another straw-man argument. Maybe you should just take time out to educate yourself on a topic rather than looking to discuss things that are not relevant?

rights? YES same rights? NO Why: [The discussion on this picture](https://media.pri.org/s3fs-public/styles/story\_main/public/story/images/One-of-the-photos-taken-b-013.jpg?itok=Ucx2FCFi) for one. The ape in question has nothing to lose or gain for having the rights on the image. In fact, it will probably don't have a clue that it actually made a selfie. If you continue down this path you could argue that any picture taken of any creature should be with the consent of the subject itself eg. :~

All animals already have the same natural rights: consume, be consumed, compete to reproduce. I think that's the full list.

but... but... being self-employed, I'm my own boss!! Reminds me of one of Stanislav Lem's "Star Diaries" stories - one of the funniest things I've ever read. He gets caught in a time warp/loop and keeps meeting versions of himself from different days. He argues with his "tomorrow" self and hits him - but not too hard because he know that in 24 hours he'll be on the receiving end of it!! :)
