#55: If you don’t regularly turn your (cheap) toaster upside down to empty it of all the burnt crumbs, they will eventually build up so much they'll short-circuit the damned thing, and... #56: if you don’t have the right fuse in your toaster-plug, when it blows it’ll take down everything else on the same circuit at the same time

Re #56: Are plugs with fuses common any other place than in UK? I've never seen a European "Schuko"-type plug with a fuse. If there is a fuse, it is in the device itself, not in the plug.

#57: Don't buy a "cheap" toaster. Get a Dualit: the ejection mechanism is a manual lever, the timer is clockwork - but it has a "crumb tray" which makes removal a breeze, it's made of real metal and real screws, and all the bits are available as spares on FleaBay. Plus, you can get a second hand one for the price of a cheap one from the supermarket, but it will last years longer (and won't look tatty and rusty the day after the guarantee runs out)

Nah - the frying pan has got the mushrooms, hash browns, and eggs. And two saucepans are in use for the beans and tomatoes, so I'm running out of rings ...

Lose the hash-browns or get more rings! No-one ever won Masterchef by grilling bacon, something that God clearly intended us to fry.

Fried bacon is for when you want it crispy - grilled is better with the tomatoes!

I'm certainly not one for burning my bacon - crispy bacon is a terrible waste, quite possibly a bigger food crime than a "well-done" steak (shudder!) I always maintain that bacon tastes better fried however well-done you like it, and as an added bonus, it makes it an awful lot easier to clean-up afterwards!

59: Don't buy any toaster at all. Design a new heat sink/toaster for you Intel Rectum X7 processor and get rich*. * You can have the toaster idea, but using the CPU's heat to run a camping refrigerator and then integrate a beer cooling compartment into the computer's case is my idea.

I have lived with several Zen masters - all of them were cats. His last invention was an evil Lasagna. It didn't kill anyone, and it actually tasted pretty good.

My toaster was a gift from my mother-in-law 12 years ago (our daughter's first Christmas). It has plates on the inside to leave a pattern of Winnie the Pooh on one piece and Tigger on the other. I have no idea what the brand is. But... it has been in almost daily use for over 12 years and is still going strong. The toaster will not leave the bread down if the toaster is unplugged (my wife regularly unplugs it to use the outlet), which means I don't put the bread in, push it down and come back later to find it has not starting toasting. As for the crumb tray? Like most tools, regular cleaning required. Would you expect to run an automobile and never service it?

Yes, I do know - this is entirely my own fault. I am not blaming the toaster. (Actually, it's the dog's fault - everything is the dog's fault... :) )

Well, indeed.... we do have our quaint little ways over here. The only really good thing about British style plugs is that they fit fairly flush against the wall, with the wires hanging straight down - I've been in places where the wires sticks out horizontally from a plug that itself sticks out a couple of inches... I mean, come on....

:Snork: The other evening the kid shouted across the house, "the toaster is broken!" (he wants a four-slice toaster, so a dead toaster is in his plans). Me: "I doubt it" He: "It won't stay down" Indeed it didn't "stay down" -- several minutes of crumb removal later, all fixed.

#57 If you don stop your boss from trying to repair his dishwisher in the company he might produce a short circuit letting you sit in front a black screen. #58 According to Murphy's law it will not blow the fuse of the used line but one of the three main fuses shutting down also a lot of other systems; especially those that require manual intercation or checks or even restarting a 24-hour calibration process that would have finished a few minutes later otherwise. Happened this Monday
