I'll be coming to London for a week May 11th. Will be doing a lot of the touristy stuff but any recommendations on what else to do. Touristy meaning museums, galleries and fish and chips.

Just stay in a Hotel with easy access to the underground (or tube!) London is a little odd for first time visitors from the US, the distances seem small, but can take an inordinate ammount of time... Mind you the Science Museum is worth a visit been to many times always something new or different! :)

Take a walk around East London, Tower Hamlets and the like so you can report back what a bunch of islamophobes we are and how multiculturalism and diversity is such a roaring success :)

Thanks, we've got the "London Pass" which I've been told is a hop on and off transit that seems like it would be real handy. My girl friend has been there a couple of times so I'm letting her do most of the planning but there are a few things I want to see also.

Go to Brick Lane in the east end for a curry. Go to Camden market. All the museums are good, and go to Soho for a beer.

Neither of us drink but I had planned on getting Fish and Chips from a small shop, heard it was the best. Here in the south (US) fish and chips are tolerable.

As an addition to what Glenn wrote, always take a look at a real map where the stations are. The tubemap is certainly not to scale. Also, the tube is the fastest transport, the buses not so much in my experience.

You may want to consider hopping on a train for a quick journey(45 minutes from Liverpool street) north to Cambridge to see the colleges, Kings Chapel and evensong is well worth the visit, as well as a punt on the Cam.

Yup, the London Pass is quite good, It might be related to a Travel thing I had in New York (same font, same layout for the website) I do know the company that installed the 'headphone guide' and I worked for the company that did there video screens...Go see a film in Leicester Square (also note the ammount of Police and Military Police at kicking out time!)

I went years ago for 2 weeks. The tower of London was fun, north east side of the tower bridge. Big Ben walk and palace, that's a one day thing. London at night walk, Picadilly area. Hang out in a pub, food everywhere. The tube maps are way off scale. One night we drank too long past midnight in Picadilly, thought we could walk to Lancaster Gate and didn't realize how far it was, we stopped and asked a Bobby how far and he said you boys look in good shape, another 2 hours. I met some girls there and went to their house for dinner in Surry Docks. Got to see how most of London lives and how tight money was there. Met some other girls that tried to scam me. That happened every night. If I did it again, I'd rent a car and go to the BMW factory, look at the English channel. Ride the train to Paris for a day. Do some British rail traveling north and east or west, just roll the dice on direction.
