Olli wrote: That sounds very intresting Believe me, Hinduism is so complex even we Hindus don't know much about it. :-O In fact, there are many practices we follow that are now fashionably ridiculed as superstition, but (almost) all of them have meaningful origins- it's just that not many poeple know the origins of those practices. At the risk of being called a Hindu fanatic (which I'm not), I'll point you to www.hinduism.co.za , which has been talked about a lot in the Lounge. No, I didn't see Indiana Jones, so I don't know what you're talking about.

Huh? Like what? Now don't give me examples to "prove" your point. Give me solid reasons why superstitions are justified, and even if we agree for a moment that they did have meaningful origins, the "meaning" was correct. And why we as an educated class we should stick to age old practices. Hinduism was a good religion as religions stand. But now it has become a concoction of casteism, superstitions and rule of the brahmins. And don't send me to websites either. You made a statement. It's your job to defend it, not the website's. If I want to argue with a website, I'll go there.

OK OK, after the beer question and the breakfast question, there is one thing that I am really intrested in: What hobbies do CPians have (exept beeing a CPian of course ;) ...) ??? My main hobby is beeing a firefighter, and when I look at the time I spend on our station, it's more than a hobby.... Another thing is making videos (producing semi pro documentation like my wedding.. ) So, what do you do in your spare-time?

 + :java: = NULL :=> X|Really, a firefighter? My father used to be the chief at a volunteer fire station and from what I can remember, it's a pretty cool job. Things I do in my spare time: When I'm by myself: 1. Surf the net 2. Play video games 3. Watch television or videos 4. Running 5. Weight lifting 6. Programming (of course:)) 7. Sleep!!! When I'm hanging out: 1. All but 1, 6, and 7 above 2. Golf and other sports 3. Movie theatre 4. Grotto (college bar) 5. Barbeque 6. Road trips Hmm, my post is getting a little long so I guess I'll stop here.:) Brad Jennings "You're mom is nice. Mind if I go out with her?" - Jörgen Sigvardsson

- Mother TeresaYou seem to be very aggressive today...I never would be saying this stuff out here, but since you asked, here goes: You know they say you should never clip your nails after the lamps have been lit? That's because, in the olden (ancient) days, the only lamps they had were oil lamps. If the oil lamps were lit, it was too dark. If it was too dark, clipping nails (with whatever they used back then) was risky- you were bound to hurt yourself. That's why they say you should never clip your nails after the lamps have been lit. Now we have all those powerful lamps, but the superstition has stuck. And do you think I am superstitious? LOL. My folks just tell me not to clip my nails around 7 PM , but I know that what they're saying is of no importance now. So, I don't care. I clip my nails anyway. Rohit Sinha wrote: And why we as an educated class we should stick to age old practices. Exactly, Rohit. You seem to have misunderstood me. I was saying that what are now superstitions were once pieces of useful advice. I'm not telling you they should be followed now. HECK, I don't follow them. And for that, I'm branded an atheist by my family. Not that I care... But you're right in some places- Hinduism has become corrupted by casteism and superstitions (which have no relevance today, though once they did). Rohit Sinha wrote: rule of the brahmins What makes you think so? In TN, 69 % of seats in colleges are reserved for the so-called backward castes. Vajpayee is not a brahmin, neither is Kalam. Yes, it is very sad to see reports of violence against SC/ST (Dalits) people in the villages. But Brahmins are never the perpetrators of these atrocities. It's done by the "upper castes", the papers say. The "upper" term is used in a relative sense here. Those people are upper compared to the Dalits. They themseleves fall into the BC/MBC/OBC categories, never Brahmins. Do you know that in my class, the Tamilian Brahmin boys are sometimes called "Ayyar"? In fact, it happens in many walks of life.
