I always crust the volume of a pizza with radius z and thickness a to be pi*z*z*a. If you do as you suggest, the volume is less. Which may be surprising, beacuse if you cut the crust off to make it square, and consider z to be the length from the center to the edges, then its volume is 4*z*z*a, and pi is less than 4.
