My problem with whiteboards is that I'll write something down and leave it there for months. After that much time, so-called "dry erase markers" might as well be permanent markers...
Rubbing alcohol can be your friend, but only if your office is well ventilated.

I use pen & paper all the time. Any paper that comes off the printer that is not claimed goes into my "scratch" pile.

Write over the dried marker with a fresh one and it should wipe right off.

Effective in the short term but will eventually render the board useless. The alcohol destroys the lubricating layer of the board. Best to use a whiteboard cleaner that doubles as a conditioner.

I am surprised by how many of my younger work mates come to meetings, presentations and brainstorming carrying an old style paper notebook. When I was that age, 15-20 years ago, noone wanted to be seen in a meeting room without a portable; that would mark you as pre-cambrium. Nowadays, it is no longer necessary to emphasize your modernness to the same degree. Obviously, everybody has smartphones, with more processing and storage capabilities than the old portable. But they are not as good for jotting down notes (certainly not if you have got big hands!), and not for curves and similar sketches. So the notebook is a nice supplement to the smartphone.
It's a matter of great irony to me that in many of the meetings I get invited to, I'm the only one who arrives completely naked - no laptop or [electronic] tablet. Most of those meetings I'll be the only computer/software-type there. I carry a small paper tablet and a pen[^], along with my reading glasses. Yes I'm old, dammit, now get the :elephant: off my lawn!

This is starting to sound like a shampoo commercial. :-D Actually, my best solution for dry-erase marker that won't go away is to draw on top of the existing marks, and immediately erase, while the new marks still haven't yet dried. You might go through a lot of ink, but I've salvaged an otherwise pretty much ruined whiteboard using that method.

I mentioned that earlier, but it won't work on a board gone bad. Once the lubricating layer of the board is gone, it cannot be cleaned no matter what you use.

Last year the bank gave away a box of pencils to everyone, so many of the young whipper snappers insist on using their laptop I ended up with 10 boxes of pencils. So yes I use paper and pencil (no clicking either).

I'm not sure what a portable is, but I keep notes on my phone - I just write them into my phone after the meeting because using a phone during a meeting tends to seen as not paying attention. Although usually I go back to a computer and type it up, it's just easier that way.
