Q-tip and Isopropyl alcohol (let it evaporate mostly - just damp, not dripping). Adjust the cotton tip to your liking. Works like a charm. I also use compressed air to get the big dust particles, etc. out. Also, wipe down the connector to the charging cable as well with a mostly evaporated alcohol wipe, etc.

Not enough space for a Q-tip - it's a USB Micro-B socket, so I can only just get the tip of a toothpick in there, and can't "rub" the actual connectors at all that I can see. (See http://www.usb.org/developers/docs/devclass_docs/CabConn20.pdf[^] Page 41 / 48 - or Page 33 as far as the document page numbering is concerned)

Stupid me, I was not paying attention to the type of connector you were specifying. Um, yeah, I would just use compressed air then. I would not use a toothpick as you could damage something, but that is your call of course.

Difficult to get hold of in the UK these days. And I'm not convinced it will do the PCB the connector is mounted to any good. :-D

My tablet has been charging really slowly for a couple of days - like I used to leave it on standby while I slept and it'd be 100% by the time I wake up: but now I'm lucky if it charges to 50% when it's turned off and charging all day. Tried different chargers, different cables, ... So I ran a toothpick over the micro USB connector and it seems to be charging faster, and I'm guessing it's gunk build up over time. Anyone got a good way to clean it, given the connector is teeny?

There are special cleaning sprays but they might be too expensive for single usage (we have them at work so that I don't have to buy them). For not corroded contacts we use KOC WebSite: Maintenance and Repair products: Kontakt WL[^]. For corroded contacts it is also used to wash out the residues after using Kontakt 60.

A model (Humberol) paint brush and a spray can of IPA or Contact cleaner. Model/toy shop for the brush, the spray can of contact cleaner can be got from the automotive section of most stores (the local Tesco for instance). ;)

The wife's phone has that little "no right side up" charging cable and she is experiencing the same thing. I'll try the toothpick thing this evening. I appreciate your sharing and all the other advice people have offered in this thread.

I was having the same problem with my phone. I solved it by powering it off, and then I used a thin pin to dig all of the gunk out of the slot. I was amazing at just how much had accumulated in there. It was USB-C, though, so it's a bit bigger than microUSB. Looking in a nearby micro USB port, it looks like a pin or needle would work on one side of the connector block in the middle, but I don't think it would fit between the connector block and the "top" of the port. SIM card ejector tools like these ones might work well. Some of them are more flat than round, so they might actually be able to clean out the whole micro USB port. When you've got it cleaned, you can get dust covers to pop in the port when you're not charging to prevent the buildup from happening again.
