I am an advocate of theirs. But you can find HackerX on the interwebs where they might give their answer. For me it wasnt exactly job hunting, but you meet folks from all walks, and discuss technologies you never thought about. It could have been OK if it hadnt been so misdimensioned. ~100 vs 20.

I had never heard of it before. I don't think I will be comfortable at such event. I wouldn't even know what (and also how) to talk to random strangers. May be that's why they have beer. For people like me.

I think that the danger comes more from honesty inarticulate speech patterns, Sober interview: "Why do you want to write code for XYZ Co.?" "Ever since I came across a computer, I've been fascinated by the possibilities of how far we can push this technology - passion, enthusiasm, blah, blah, blah ... and I've always wanted to work for XYZ more than any other firm because they're so innovative and wonderful etc., etc." Drunk interview: "Why do you want to write code for XYZ Co.?" "Coding? Yeah, right. Bad career choice many years ago, I suppose. Too late to change it now - only s**t that people will give me any money for these days. Honestly mate, it's like that Smiths song, really - you know the one where he says 'I know that I'd feel more fulfilled making Christmas cards for the mentally ill' or something like that? That's kind of how I feel, but what can you do? A gig's a gig, I guess, no matter how bleeding soul devouring it is. Gissa job, will you mate? Those bills won't pay themselves. Apparently this HackerX thing is huge. From Edinburgh to Vegas. Sit in line for an hour and then chat with three companies, 5 minutes each. Free pizza and beer. I cannot quite decide how I felt about the whole thing, but I sure didnt fancy going into the second line. Have you done something similar?

Do you want to know how long did it take? 1 hour in November 2017, after a while they said I was interesting but they had no openings for me; 2 hours in February 2018, I renounced the possibility because I did not like the job offered; 1 hour in July 2018 to organize the meeting after my honeymoon, in September; 1 hour in August 2018 to explore the offering with the company; 2 hours in September 2018 to speak to the customer to see if I was ok for them; 3 hours to discuss salary and expenses (I'll have to drive a lot more than now, with car consumptino and expenses I do not meet, it's about 6k/year of new expenses) 1.5 hours today to explore every comma of the contract and iron out the last details. 5 minutes? Pffft.

This internet thing is amazing! Letting people use it: worst idea ever!

It was mostly startups. The interviewers were often the founders. And it was more about the companies showing themselves than checking out tech skills. You can hardly do the latter in a blink.

I see you remember quite well the situation at my current (well, former) workplace :D IT policies depend from the customer, some of them are Defense so I wouldn't bet on it, but mostly it should be normal. Managers, they've been exceedingly present up to now, I almost refused them a couple of days ago and two of them, separatedly, called me to change my mind (and I gained some more €€ in the process). All the people I met who work there are satisfied and relaxed, so it's either a relaxed workplace or they're all Zen masters in disguise as engineers.

startups sounds OK, but given 90% are idiots (not my stat = "90% of all new businesses fail in the first year") a tough way to find a winner. Only 3 interviews to strike one of the 1 in 10 that might have an OK idea/product from the 1 in 10 that has funds & commitment to get through the dev before going belly up - phhht. lucky dip, or 10 guys at the flea market selling the same china power banks, if you're lucky one of those guys will have one piece that will actually last longer than a month.

Did a couple in Toronto and my experience was not bad. No beer though. I believe they are ran by a local "franchise" so YMMV depending on the group organizing it.
