Yard/rummage/garage sale
-
This past weekend Shelly (my wife) and I held a huge yard sale. (BTW, what do you guys normally call these?) It involved donations from about 34 different families, because we held it in order to raise money for an adoption. (Shelly and I have been married 6 years -- no kids yet :(. So, we've decided to adopt as soon as we have the money. :)) Needless to say, we are extremely worn out from hauling all that stuff. When we put away the leftovers, we looked at it and realized it was about the right amount for your average yard sale. A pat on the back and a big grin to the first one to guess how much money the yard sale brought in! :-D (Hint: it was quite successfull for a yard sale. Don't bother with anything other than a "0" in the 1's position, and completely disregard digits that would follow the decimal point.) John
34 families * $20 worth of stuff per family = $680 initial inventory And i'm going to be generous and say you sold half. $340. That's my final answer. They're called yard sales here in SC, but I remember calling them tag sales in CT. Personally, I call them garbage sales. :) BW "I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific." - Lily Tomlin

We call them garage sales. I'm guessing $500. cheers, Chris Maunder

That's the sort of guess I was expecting, but amazingly Vikram's second guess is closer! (I still can't resist being excited about it. Woot!) John

Good fortune adopting John, more people should IMO. We don't really have yard/garage/boot sales here. Most people who want to sell that kind of thing flock together at weekend fleamarkets and sell there. Most make zip. Good to hear you did well though :)

And the governments would spend less money on taking care of them if they were adopted sooner.) Paul Watson wrote: Most people who want to sell that kind of thing flock together at weekend fleamarkets and sell there. Fleamarkets. That always struck me as a totally weird name. What sort of horrible market was it that had so many fleas? And why did people keep shopping there? ;P John

Thanks for the interesting response. Though, I'm not sure it answered either of my questions... :) It looks like the guessers are giving up. Should I post the answer? John

my final, final answer is $1190 BW "I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific." - Lily Tomlin

brianwelsch wrote: my final, final answer is $1190 Well, then you get the prize for being the closest. (No pat on the back, since it's not actually right. :-D) The $2000 guess was the second closest. The total was *insert suspense-building something-or-other here* $1500. That is just plain amazing for a yard sale. I'm still not sure that I can believe it. John

Educated (well...) guess: 1500?

Now how did this post (being so well educated) appear above other posts that were written beforehand? Good guess! *pats you on the back* :-D John
