I think there should be a difference between basic rights, man on the other hand has assigned himself a whole bunch of additional rights. Actually I take that back, there are no rights except those invented by man. In nature you don't even have the right to live if some bigger, meaner, hungry beastie decides to make you lunch.

That is true. And of course as part of nature man has no real rights either, he can be hit by lightening or attacked by disease at any time. So rights themselves are un-natural? Or are rights an attempt to impose divinity on a cruel nature? But we do have basic rights for animals. For example in farming, and in the UK the RSPCA is very strong, has a lot of power.

A daily struggle with predators, parasites, diseases, and animals mating without asking whether the other animal is a he/she/zir/helicopter, or even bothering with things like consent. If there were big cats in your era of "natural perfection", you'd find bloodied rotting bodies everywhere because the cat don't eat the entire thing. Harmony is definitely not the state of nature; it is murder, rape and disease, a daily fight for survival. If you only watched Bambi and the Lion king, then yes, it was a paradise. If you want, you can still visit such paradises, as long as you leave your GSM at home :thumbsup:

Since I agree with the theory of evolution, nature birthed us and we are a consequence of natural selection. Humanity, therefore, is part of nature. Should humans be cognizant of our individual and group impacts on our environment? Of course we should. We only have one planet for the time being and should take care of it. I'm still undecided on global warming as there is too little data to achieve a meaningful conclusion but there are human activities that are having an obvious environmental impact, such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which can be addressed immediately. We should focus on what's in front of us instead of arguing about unproven theory.

I agree, but don't be misled by the media about the pacific garbage patch, it is not a floating island of plastic. What it is is an area of sea with a high density of tiny plastic particles, about 100kgs per sq km I recall.

I must admit that most of what I know about it is from the documentary Plastic Paradise: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch[^] that documents the impacts to wildlife on Midway Atoll which lies in the center of the north pacific gyre. Don't watch it if you have eaten recently. X| First saw it on Netflix but I did find a posting on YouTube.
