I got engaged to the missus about 30 yrs ago and neither of us thought there was any point in a wedding. Still happily together. Our laws treat married and defacto people the same, so a wedding served absolutely no point or relevance what-so-ever... (and no I don't care what peoples pixies might think :) ) So don't like and don't wear any rings. The missus has a collection of rings she wears as she pleases.

My son recently got married because his now wife became irritated by the odd looks she got when she introduced their kids with a different surname at the school.

I live in the southeast of the US and I see lots of married couples that do not have wedding rings, but rather something that looks like it came out of a cereal box. When did plastic rings become a thing for marriages? I have never understood people going in to debt for a wedding ring but this seems a bit overkill. What's going on? I'm tempted to get married again so I can figure out what they are all about. Is this happening in other countries?

They are rubberized rings. They are getting more and more common with people who work with their hands, especially using power tools. The thinking behind it is if the ring gets snagged, it breaks the ring off instead of the ring tearing your finger off. But, of course, other people just use them because they're cheap.

At a music event I clapped my hands a little too hard and the ring made a blood vessel in the finger pop. In 10 seconds or less, the finger was twice as thick as normal and we had to quickly cut the ring off with pliers. Haven't worn the ring since then, but we're still together all the same...

Chuckle - I've been married over 40 years and have never worn a wedding band, I think the wife has it squirrelled away in a draw somewhere. I hate jewellery and have never worn any in my life, plastic or not!

plain gold band: wife's got skinny fingers only cost about $100 when bought. my fingers a bit fatter, almost an oz, paid around $300 ... worth a wee bit more now (but not a profit, kids have negative geared that way below zero.)
I was going to suggest a metal ring might hold it's value more than a plastic one, so not sure the cost is an issue so long as it's afofrdable to the perosn purchasing it.

Are those the silicon bands? I have a few for when my finger changes size in different temperatures or when I'm going to be swimming or something and don't want to worry about losing it.
