Some of these things have a "don't show this again" option, and others you have to go into some rules or settings to turn them off. But it's like swotting flies, as soon as you whack one a couple more turn up. Dunno who'se behind this crap, but seems the evelotion of vs goes something like: vs2010 - do a few things but do them pretty well vs2013 - do a more then a few things, but some only averagely vs2015 - do even more things, ran out of time (2017 came up) so left half done vs2017 - do a boat load of stuff but only half- assed, don't fix anything, just add even more vs2019 - pre-releases / announcements indicate goal is to find out how much that puppy will hold oh, vscode starting to go down the same path, ... I tried it, I really tried hard, nah. I'm sure it'll be fine for the hobby devs and some juniors, but for serous work, nah. When you want a "Swiss army knife" you buy the real thing, not some knockoff. ms and multi-os-multi-language, heck just ms and linux - again maybe fine for beginners but not for anyone with proper ability.

Am I the only one bothered by the frequency of the "releases"? Are they real improvements? Or are they just Marketing ploys to boost sales? How much is just fluff and glitz?

Tired of sprinting to keep up....

Lopatir - you nailed the assessment of the Visual Studio versions. Not to mention that each new version is more cloud connected meaning that the tool is slower with every release as it waits to check in with the mothership at Redmond every time it starts. I miss the days when everything you needed from an IDE was on your hard drive. IDE, Compiler, Help files, Samples, Etc. Yes help can get stale, but that is the time to connect to the internet not every login.

What's up with all the clown car crap going on in the editor? Every time I move the cursor, the editor lights up like room full of freakin clown noses. There's so much going on that it's hugely distracting.

As far as I'm concerned Microsoft's UIs, across all product lines, have been getting worse since Office/VS 2010. They've gotten monochromatic and the framing features of the UI (take a look at Outlook's calendar grid lines for an example) have gotten so dim that they're useless. The only bright spot has been the improvements in the Windows 10 context menus.

I have it (VS 2017) installed but rarely use it as VS 2010 still handles most of my needs, is stable and starts blazingly fast...and to think, I'm missing out on all these new features!

VS 2010 is still my favorite as well. Only downside is it does not connect to the newer versions of SQL so you cannot debug stored procs from SQL > 2012. Other than that it is much faster than any of the newer versions.

I ain't sayin' it doesn't work - I'm sayin' it's like crap on a cracker as delivered. I'll be playing settings whack-a-mole for a few days, trying to get it so it can't be seen from space.

Notice that things started going sideway when they took away our MDI interface (which happend when they went to WPF for the IDE).

The reason we tell people is because if we don't, people will invite us over to dinner and give us meat and then they'll be all like "oh, I didn't know, but I wished you'd told me sooner!" ;) Now we tell people and just don't get invited over. And carnivores share their meat eating stories all the time too (probably even more often then veggies), but no one notices because it's the default! How often have you heard "I went out to dinner and had me a good steak!" or "BBQ tonight, I'd sure like me a juicy piece of meat!" or "Hell yeah, chicken wings!" or "You can wake me up for salami pizza!" Yet when I say "I'm a vegetarian, so please get something I can eat as well..." I'm "that" guy ;) Also, spread the word, eat less meat! :D

I still like 2008 the best, myself, but I moved to 2017 a year or so ago. Doesn't seem inordinately distracting, maybe the OP is talking the 2019 version (as others have said).
