I’ve worked in UX for the better part of a decade. From now on, I plan to remove the word “user” and any associated terms—like “UX” and “user experience”—from my vocabulary.

I know, let's replace it with 'victim'

    What an absolute bleeding moron.

So, a typical mouth with no brain backing it up -- "Ooh! I've finally had an idea that no-one else has thought of!" The fact that it's an idea that no-one should have thought of doesn't matter; it's as original as this kind of absolute bleeding moron gets. How about we don't call customers customers, consumers consumers, people people, and dogs dogs, because it's stereotyping them? Note that I emphasised the word "stereotyping" because it's obviously a word the absolute bleeding moron doesn't know, but is maybe just about growing up enough to understand what it means. However, using the type of word called "noun" to define an object/person/thing is not stereotyping! It's called using words! Communication! We should remove every noun from every language, according to this absolute bleeding moron, because using a noun is inherently stereotyping! Was your new computer delivered in a box? DON'T CALL IT A BOX! You're denying it its right to be considered as landfill! Oh, and, as for UX, it took me seven clicks (including scrolling through pages of small-point text) to reach the link to the tool to turn off some of the site's data slurping. Since the absolute bleeding moron claims extensive expertise in UX, we can only assume that this is malicious behaviour, intended to subvert the law that states it must be easy and quick to do, so I shall be adding the site to several lists, for scrutiny.

Reading between the lines, I think that Mark thinks that the guy who wrote the article is a bit of a plonker. He may well be right.

Ah! Ok, so we need to be more specific then: What about "users" seated at desktops as KSI's - as in Keyboard Seat Interfaces. Or then those on phones as "swipers". Come on! If you want to write about such things, then at least show you've got some idea of what to do in its place! :(( I must say, I've always thought the word "user" has this addict connotation. Though in some cases it may even be an apt analogy. :~

I know! Just replace 'users' with 'lusers', 'after sales' with 'LART', and 'blogger' with...

Never new that 'user' can be used in this context - we use the more convenient 'that idiot' phrase...

I had an (ex-)fellow developer complain that I wrote code referring to "master" and "slave" components!

This is a sign of the times, when we have people constantly on the lookout for something new to be offended about.

I find that point of view offensive!

                                        Brain dead stupid.

In product design, “user” and the other U-words have been foundational to defining the relationship between humans and tech. The former uses. The latter is used. But labeling people as users strips them of complexity. It reduces humans to a single behavior, effectively supporting a view of people as more like robots whose sole function is to use a product or feature.

That's a strong hint that he is useless as someone in the UX/Usability field. The entire field is about defining users, and understanding what behaviors they most commonly expose (hint: it's almost never a single one). His writing clearly shows that he did not understand his job, or role in the industry.

I always thought the word "user" was a bit odd. "Users" to me were drug addicts. Oh, wait...
