Maybe old news, but... Outlook + gmail accounts

Hi all, Two days ago (more or less) each time my outlook tries to connect to GMAIL a window appear with a small login web page (the login to gmail web page inside a small window)... Is this legit? I've been infected by something insidious? Any of you have seen it? Thank you all!

I can't speak for Outlook I do use Thunderbird on my desktop box so that my emails are both online and 'backed' up within Thunderbird. I don't get any problems with requests from the Thunderbird pop email fetch. In case it is a configuration issue I use pop.googlemail.com on port 995 with my google password saved in Thunderbird. Is there any chance you have typed your password incorrectly into the Outlook account settings?

Nope, but I've started moving a lot for work, so I'm using it from different networks... It was working well a couple of weeks ago... and now this popup appears each time I try to get my gmail). :confused:

I used to get my GMail through Outlook (in the good ol' days) - no more! They are getting more incompatible every day it seems to me. In addition, my new job doesn't allow access to GMail through their network (probably a good thing) so I use it on my phone only now.

I don't know about a web page, but every now and then I get a login popup. gmail from time to time rejects the credentials and won't sync. Log on via a browser and see if you have any security alerts and follow then instructions to unblock Outlook. Also I've got my main email in my gmail account as a backup email so that I can see any of these security notification almost straight away.

Not really new indeed. Well, sure, this particular face of the old problem is new, but the problem isn't. The problem is that Google doesn't really care about standards. Using Gmail over IMAP has been a PITA way back, your story doesn't surprise me in the least. Google wants you to use their own app, not some third-party standards-shmandards.

Yesterday I responded to a Google email advising me that I should turn off access to my Google account by "less secure apps" ... so I did. This morning Outlook is bombarding me will failure messages whenever it tries to get emails from that account. I just dug deep into my Google account and found out how to turn "allow access from less secure apps" back on (not recommended) and Outlook is a happy chappy again.

I'm using Outlook 2010 and not having that problem.

I get the same (I assume) pop-up often for my ancient yahoo account. That you're only recently getting the pop-up there is a high probability something is going on with the server. I don't believe the pop-up you're getting is from a virus.

My favorite is still that checkbox on the Gmail site, where you have to tell it to "allow unsecure applications" to access your mailbox, otherwise Outlook won't work. They really are as childish and petty as Apple.

Gmail doesn't like Outlook because many of us who use Outlook use POP can delete their emails from Google's servers upon retrieval. This means Google doesn't have as much chance to see how you use that email then, which reduces their ability to data mine your personal life.

Great point. I've never thought about it like that, but you're absolutely right. Google's stated it themselves, they don't want anything deleted--EVER. Everything's up for data mining. I'm suddenly starting to think of Google as the crows that try to rip open and pick through the garbage bags you put up at the curb on garbage day that you have to shoo away.
