Original Mac Calculator Vs Win10 Calc
-
This has inspired me. My company policy does not allow me to install any third party software not passed by the security group - a process that takes months. However, since I am allowed to run self-written programs, I going to write my own WinForm version with all the functions I want on it, none that I don't, and styled the way I want it!
- I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.
Go for it. Did one ages ago due to lack of bits when converting to Bin from Hex or Dec. Later calculators supported larger numbers. Wasn't that arduous and didn't take up too much time from memory. Then again my memory isn't like it used to be. But the best thing with using your own calculator is if you require a new function, you can just add it. Perfect.

I am reading Andy Hertzfeld[^]'s fantastically interesting site (http://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&story=Desk_Ornaments.txt&sortOrder=Sort+by+Date[^]) and I come across this sentence...
Andy Hertzfeld:
I wrote a simple clock, and got the calculator going, modeled after Steve Jobs' design from the calculator construction set.
That leads me to search for : steve jobs calculator construction set And that leads me to this article: Steve Jobs Designed The First Macintosh Calculator - Business Insider[^] There is a picture of the original Mac Calculator. I took a snapshot for you : https://i.stack.imgur.com/3fmWs.png[^] Compare that to the Win10 calculator: https://i.stack.imgur.com/BnYlb.png[^] It's interesting to see the similarities and differences since they were designed so many years apart. I think I like the old design because it reminds me of old 8-bit games.
So many people who proclaim "ugly", "horrible", ... But not a single word to describe what it is that makes it ugly or horrible. If those ugly, horrible designs where to be stepwise modified into a good-looking design, I'd be very curious to see the justitification for each modification step. Not just that "it looks nicer if you do it so-and-so", but why doing so-and-so is nicer. "That is just sooooo 2018!" is of no real help to make good-looking designs for 2020. The reason people made it that way for 2018 is that they honestly thought it was a good-looking design. And they were not wrong: In 2018 it was a good design.

I hate the new design with that broad expanse of white space -- what on earth is wrong with having keys be clearly delimited visually?

Easy UWP application. Speaking of horrible do any of you use the UWP versions of Solitaire or Spider Solitaire?

And that right there is the reason Microsoft rules the Software world. They made it easier than ever to "fix" your frustrations by allowing you to write something better. If Apple had not been so locked down, they might have overcome Microsoft.

Strange. My frustrations diminish when I throw Mickeysoft out the door.

You've proven that your opinion on this matter is overly biased and not clearly thought out. :-D

Exactly. I always wanted a return on investment at a certain interest rate over so many years button. I have done it in Excel, obviously, but I want a calculator button for it! ;) ...and how many calculators have spell check, eh?

I don't doctor around with the symptoms and simply remove the source of my frustration. A thing you obviously do not know how to do, or you would know that this is an inherently biased matter. Otherwise there would be no need for an exorcism. :-)

The worst thing about it is the presence of an equals key. That means it's not RPN...

As long as my keyboard pad and GUI have mostly the same orientation. Why did smart phones post 2007 not take the opportunity to align up the PC keyboard orientation and phone number keypad? I actually had to check what the orientation was on my phone before suggesting they are flipped, because how often are people using the keypad that much now?

Because 'correctly' in their case means being treated like their personal nigger with the privilege of handing them some money for the honor. Or short: I don't think their stuff is worth it anymore.

The error here lies in thinking anything from Microsoft is "designed"; traditionally, Microsoft applications have started as a programmer copying the functionality he has seen on another system. That application is then morphed by the alterations of other programmers, willy-nilly, for better or worse, over time.

Now don't be so shocked. What you think of their products or their quality is a thing we could probably discuss to no end, but their behavior is not excusable. They grin and say 'take it or leave it'. If they put it that way, then I always leave it.
