I was remoted to a Windows 10 PC and needed to install some updates. I did that and agreed when it wanted to reboot. I forgot that I was in the middle of copying a large file from another workstation to the remote PC. The PC rebooted, went through the "Installing updates" and "Configuring Windows features" phases and came back up. The file copy soldiered on through all of that and completed successfully!

An even nicer surprise would be, on its next update, to update you to Windows 7.

That would, in fact, be an upgrade as far as I am concerned.

...or so it said. How confident are you it actually did the right thing? I'd be doing a binary compare, or doing hashes on both ends. Even if it did...it's definitely not the sort of thing I'd ever intentionally let happen.

I don't actually understand this, and I'm not trying to be obtuse. What is it about Win10 that makes Win7 so much better (apart from Aero. I do miss that!)

            0. The user interface is far superior in W7 in my opinion. Everything about W10's UI is a large step backwards as far as I am concerned. There is not one single thing about it that is an improvement. 1. When I close the lid on my laptop W7 does not turn it on, attempt to update it, and then leave it on with the lid closed. Maybe that's not a problem with a normal laptop but mine has a GPU in it that I use for games and CUDA programming and it can get VERY hot. Doing this is %&$%&@ STUPID!!! yet they have done nothing to stop it. 2. W7 does not come with dozens of useless apps (for me) that are loaded at startup and are impossible to uninstall or to stop from running. Cortana is one example, Skype is another, and there are several more. 3. W7 has a much more coherent user interface for configuration settings. I have lost count of how many times I have made a change on one W10 computer and then I can't find that option on a different computer. ... I could go on but I will stop there.

speaking of useless apps it's embarrassing helping people setup w10 laptops for business use and having to explain that ms have decided the xbox gaming stuff can't be removed. also weird of ms all these "linuxy" apps coming through, if someone want's linux are they going to be tempted by some half baked simulations on w10? (or is it ms realizing many pissed of w7 users are going to linux so some stupid attempt to get them to stay on winduds) ms has lost their way, and once the cloud fad dies down they'll have nothing.

Aero and Update Control. I roll my eyes every time I open 10's Settings program and see their new 'Aero' implementation - the active window goes transparent and all the rest become solid!  Someone in the Aero team implemented the obvious - the window you are using should be solid, or at least less transparent then the rest. Duh.

There are different levels of hate just like there are supposedly different levels of hell. For example: Windows 7 was annoying because you had to configure it the way you wanted. Windows 10 is annoying because you cannot configure it the way you wanted. A big difference.

Not at all - I liked 2000, XP and 7 I hated Vista, and don't get me started on Win8 or 10. The only reason I switched to Linux on all my boxes is because it won't be long before they stop pushing updates for win7, and I refuse to install anything newer from MS.

That's an apt summary of the situation. For me though, W10 is beyond annoying. I genuinely despise it.

That's the overriding feeling I get from using W10 - DUH. Followed closely by, "what were they thinking?" and then, "was anyone actually thinking there?" Seriously, was anyone thinking when they decided it was a good idea to turn on a laptop, attempt to update it, and then leave it on when it's lid is CLOSED? For flying elephants' sake, I don't think so. That is a decision devoid of logical thought.

The only pleasant surprise I ever got from winio was when I was getting ready to rant about the option to configure what shows and dosn't show in the system tray being removed. It turns out that you can just drag and drop the icons, now, which is an actual improvement. But it also turns out that that was a windows 8 feature.

I've got my computer in my bedroom. I just put it to sleep. About three minutes after I do so, and go to bed, the screen comes on bright as it tries to update. If I leave it alone, it usually stays on for a minute. Fn annoying! And then, when it does update, it never closes open programs correctly. Super Fn annoying!!!

Oh, don't worry. It won't work for much longer. It's because of the delayed write feature, which buffers the data that's being copied -- which, in turn, allows it to be "hibernated" in the pagefile. But that's useful technology, so they're removing it.

I am absolutely confident. I posted that the copy completed successfully only when I knew that it had completed successfully.

I don't actually understand this, and I'm not trying to be obtuse. What is it about Win10 that makes Win7 so much better (apart from Aero. I do miss that!)
