Some of you may know that I've started learning a new skill - lock picking. I've been practicing several times a day for weeks with some "learning locks" (perspex bodies, so you can see what is going on) and I've got to the point where I can can feel what is happening - not well, but all skills take time to build up. Anyhoo ... I just picked my first "real" lock*! Took about 90 seconds or so, and really wasn't that hard. I've tried maybe a dozen times before and got nowhere so it's a big "YES!" moment for me. :-D * the 5 pin Euro cylinder I took out of the back door last week and replaced with a "thumb internal" one so Herself could use it without hunting for a key in an emergency.

It's kinda difficult to explain, but it's fascinating to watch someone who really knows what they are doing, doing what they do best. It's the "unconscious competence" that they demonstrate, I suspect. It's what taught me to change motorcycle tyres, fix their engines, rewire the electrics, etc. ... You never lose anything by watching a master at work, and you might learn something. :-D

Very true. Some very useful and practical skills to learn. Maybe I should learn a new skill, like "Robbing A Bank" But where could I use that. Hmmm

I have the same fascination watching a master potter at work, pisses the wife off no end as I am happy to stand a watch for hours if we go to a potter that allows onlookers.

I can't wait to see the big shoot-out at the end, after you've picked the lock on the contessa's chastity belt and she's handed over the ledger.

Most thieves don't pick locks - they smash a window, or force a door. It's easier, quicker and requires less skill. Locks are there to deter the honest!

Just a cheap "starter set": Godpick 17-Piece Lock Pick Set with 6 Clear Practice and Training Locks for Lock picking + Guide for Beginner and Pro Locksmiths: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools[^] - it includes locks that don't have any picks suitable (dimple locks and disk detainer) and the disk detainer sample if so poorly made that you don't need to pick it - you can open it with a tension bar. I also made a couple of wiper tensioners from old wiper blades. They work really well, as they don't get in the way when trying to get a pick to the deepest pins. I also got one of these: 3pcs Full Kit Accessories Tubular 7 Pins Locksmith Lock Pick Tools Equipment UK | eBay[^] for tubular locks (it's the one LPL uses!) I figured I'd pick up "better" picks later, if I got into it properly (each pick is about the same as the whole kit was for decent ones and climbing).

That's a coincidence, I saw a video recently of a guy picking a lock ( can't remember where though ) and it too piqued my inquisitive nerdy head - I've ordered a cheap beginners set of tools from Amazon - new page on this site maybe ? Lockpickers Q & A :-D
