Is there such a thing as an offline blog authoring tool that does require any software on the server side, ie it just uploads the entries by ftp, and handles all the archiving on the author's PC? If not I may be forced to write an article...

You had a look at the list on Google? http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Weblogs/Tools/Publishers/[^] There are a couple there which are Windows apps. I used one long ago (sorry cannot remeber the name) that was what you are asking for.

I found this, today, http://www.blogger.com[^] it doesn't do the archiving bit though (I think), but using something like WS_FTP you can do that last bit yourself. Cheers, Barry

All those windows app versions are so bad that he will recoil in horror and be forced to write his own. He will also have then learnt what does not work. (well, at least the blog app I used was rather bad. It felt like a Java app, but it was not.)

I've tried most of them and they are either server specific or buggier than my back garden. Oh well, as soon as I finish this requirements document( X| ) I'll write an article.

Well I think this might be what you're looking for, but you'll have to pay for the full version: http://www.fogcreek.com/CityDesk/[^] There is a basic version you can try out though to make sure before you stump up the cash. This http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000009.html[^] kind of explains what is going on. I haven't downloaded it myself. :( If you do, and it's any good, let me know. Or of course, you could write your own ;) Cheers, Barry

Can be with add ons - I think w.bloggar lets you work offline and Blogger does do archiving. I use the pro version for my sites below and very good it is too. I wrote my own system in ASP that generated XML and other goodies but I just spent the time fiddling with code. I wanted to get back to the content so switched to Blogger. When google bought them my confidence in my choice increased!! :-D Davy Blog for Software Testing, Bugs, Quality, Security and Stability - www.latedecember.com

I have been with blogger since they started right up till it was just a one man band. Good guy that Evan. Bit like Chris in the way he has created an amazing site and service. Though there are some useful features in the pro version. But the core is solid and focused.
