Think I've seen this before, that Everest is the highest above sea level, Mauna Kea the highest from its base (on the seafloor), and Chimborozo the farthest from the Earth's centre.

All tiny, compared to the majesty that is Olympus Mons[^] Which to the best of my knowledge is still unclimbed.

Tricky question which is far more complicated than it seems. List of highest mountains on Earth[^] Greg Utas seems to have provided the most accurate answer for now.

Yeah, but my question was regarding earth. :) Olympus Mons couldn't exist here. The crust isn't strong enough, for the higher gravitation.

Everest. Mauna Kea is a volcano so IMHO does not count as mountain. Chimborazo is not highest above sea level so that does not count either.

Too bad that the highest known mountain is a volcano.

Señor, how do you call this delicious crust around the Chili you served me? That's a clay bowl, señor. I don't think that gravity has anything to do with that.

Olympus Mons has been dethroned! It's only the highest planetary mountain in the solar system now. The new king is a central peak in a crater on the asteroid Vesta now. Good that Commander McLane did not hit it when he tried to land the fast cruiser Orion VII on Vesta[^], much to the delight of his superiors.

If a mountain was on earth, wouldn't it sink and its earth base would get compacted? I assume that the question ought to be "What is the highest mountain on Earth?"
