There was an interesting article a couple of days ago in The Daily telegraph on this subject. One of the main problems is how these cars can adapt to the different road types, weather conditions, cars parked the wrong way round, roundabouts, give way signs, etc. on UK (and some European) roads. The difficulties of testing all conditions are almost endless.

Very true, as well as the inevitable ethical issues.

I'd be OK with it as long as there was a big red button.

Had another discussion about it, and the question materialized: Would you as a developer sit/use in a self driving car? And under what circumstances/limitations?

Yes, as long as they don't refer to me as beta tester. :)

I'd rather drive it myself...as long as I have my brain working.........and i can see.. and as long as they have side mirrors and the rear view and the accelerator and the brake and the lights at night and....

Think of how well Windows works after twenty years. A simple car shouldn't be a problem.

Hell yeah, under the circumstance where I have to drive and I'd rather not so I let the car handle it which is pretty much always :D But, only in a few years when they're a bit more battle tested (and I can afford it) ;)

Within a generation, people will look at you funny if your drive yourself. Pretty soon after that, it'll be illegal to do it for safety reasons. I'm actually amazed the people are allowed to drive at all! The things I've seen ... reading the paper, typing on a lappie, drunk as a skunk, having sex, rummaging in the glovebox, ...

As long as all the other cars on the road were also self driving... Otherwise, nope. I trust the software to do the right thing. I don't trust other (unpredictable) human drivers.

NO - I enjoy driving but then I live on the outskirts of a small rural city and do not have to deal with peak hour traffic anymore. Even when I had an 80km commute into Sydney I enjoyed the trip.
