I may be a speed freak. Not when I'm driving, I am that idiot in front of you who insists on driving at the speed limit, no matter how closely you tailgate him. But I love fast computers, since fiddling with computers is my only hobby. About a year ago my previous desktop was getting old (7 years) and I got a new one from Dell. The new one came with a NVMe slot for a M.2 SSD system drive. I added a regular SATA SSD for an internal data drive. I noticed that the machine was very fast, but yesterday for the first time I ran benchmark software to compare the speed of both SSDs. The test result blew me away. Sequential read speed were 560 MB/s for the SATA SSD, but 3539 MB/s for the M.2 SSD! The M.2 was more than 6 times faster than the regular SATA SSD. Wow! OK Mr Dell, for my next desktop I want a machine with three NVMe M.2 slots. One for my systems drive, one for my data drive and for the drive where I store my systems images, PLEASE!
I buy slow computers that freeze every few seconds so I can tell people I'm just a very fast coder :D

I too love speed (when it comes to dev boxes) too, and like you, I don't feel the need to exceed the speed limit when driving. My weapon of choice is the GigaByte BRIX[^]. My (now 3 year old) model has an 8-core i7 running at 3.2GHz, 16GB RAM, and a 500GB fast-write Samsung SSD. I use it exclusively for development and it screams! :cool: /ravi

Yes, and the new models support 2 drives and 32G RAM. Aside from its speed, I love the fact that I can put it in my briefcase when I travel (which admittedly isn't often) because it's only 4" x 4" x 2" in size. It's smaller than my WD 8TB MyBook external drive! /ravi

I'll take the fastest drive I can get for the OS, but other things really don't matter. My main data store is a NAS, and my network connection is the bottleneck, not the set of 8TB spinning drives I have it running. It's not like MP3s sound better if the bits are read faster. Even a slow spinning drive can keep up with realtime playback (even full HD video). A few years ago, when SSDs were still at a premium, I had to talk a neighbor out of buying a bunch of SSDs just to host his multi-TB music collection. The OS, apps, some data...it makes sense...but beyond that, it's easy to get into overkill territory.

You may be overlooking one consideration. The best M.2 SSDs now cost the same as SATA SSDs of the same size and soon will be cheaper. Why buy an old style SSD when you can get a version that is 6 times faster for the same price? [Edit] Of course you need a main board with a dedicated NVMe slot for every M.2 drive. You cannot fit them to any computer.
