I am trying to get a NEW version of Kip Irvine's book: "Assembly Language for X86 Processors Seventh Edition". Should be simple - right? I ordered it from Amazon. Those sunshines do not sell it themselves, but they sell through third party bookstores. Ordered a copy, but the store sent me a contraband version that is only to be sold in India! The paper quality is poor, and although new the book arrived dirty and not in the best of shape. I can live with all that, BUT: the access code that you need to register your purchase so you can get access to its website and download codes, does not work in the USA! The kind seller will only let you return it if you cover the return shipping cost, which is about the price of the book. Amazon is of no help, but I plan to register a serious complaint about the seller. Not that Amazon would care! :sigh: I have researched a number of other sellers. Most have lousy ratings: For selling contraband Indian product. The vast majority are selling second hand books - which means the access code has been used and is no longer valid. I found one source selling a new version of the sixth (previous) version for $160 :omg: Does anyone know where I can get a new legitimate copy of the seventh edition at a reasonable price? Thanks!

I'd file a dispute with the credit card issuer, and issue a charge-back if it were me. Amazon can go stick it up their rear with attitude like that. It's not the amount of money, but I'm not going to be cheated like that.

Better hope they're not thorough about blocking people; your credit records will tie whatever card you use on your current account and whatever card you try to use on a replacement back to your identity. If they ban people, not just accounts, you won't be able to do an easy end run.

Yeah, I don't think they'd go that far. Besides, I could generate an unlimited number of virtual card numbers within my bank account. Identity? They'd have my identity my a*$e. They ship items to my po box and don't know my surname. They don't have my address, and don't have my phone number (not a real one anyways).

Ironic you'd phrase it like that. I'm not "doing an easy and running" if they failed to take action after I report having been cheated. They're the ones expecting to do an easy and run, but that won't work with me. You're also talking as if an amazon account is my passport. I treat it as a disposable entity.

Don't just blame Amazon. The publisher (Pearson) have this stupid arrangement where you need a valid access code to use their website and get the source files to download. The access code only works once. Don't buy the book second hand. The code won't work. If an unscrupulous seller sells you a book in the "wrong" part of the world, the access code will be invalid. The Indian version of the book doesn't even have the right number of letters / numbers in their access code, yet numerous sellers are selling it here in the USA. I am going back to Apress: Modern X86 Assembly Language Programming by Daniel Kusswurm. I have always liked Apress books. They choose their authors well and they offer unrestricted access to the online source code of the book.

I am stuck through no fault of my own with Irvine's book without the ability to download its source files. The "access codes" supplied with the Indian version of this book (that is widely sold by retailers here in the USA) don't work! Clearly trusting an Amazon supplier was a mistake. I am dumping the book and going with publisher Apress's book: Modern X86 Assembly Language Programming by Daniel Kusswurm. I have always liked books published by Apress. They choose their authors well and they offer unrestricted online access to their books' resources. No stupid access codes required! And this book was supplied by Amazon itself, not some shady retailer.

Yes. I just decided to rather use the book Modern X86 Assembly Language Programming by Daniel Kusswurm, published by Apress. You can access the book's source code online unrestricted - no need for access codes. I have always had good experiences with Apress books. They really pick good authors for their books. Too many retailers here seem to sell the Indian issue of Irvine's book. The access codes given in the Indian version of the book don't seem to work in the USA and I don't feel like typing all the sources files.
