A mix of Mint, Ubuntu (Gnome), and Lubuntu.

      +2 for Mint (Mate)

I did not resist. I upgraded very soon after 10 became available. I posted this message for those who did resist and possibly regret it now.

However, it seems (at least as of 27 Nov 2019) you can use your Win7 or Win8 product key to activate an upgrade or fresh install of Win 10.

If you don't remember your existing key, you can retrieve it using ProduKey[^] (free). /ravi

I upgraded all of my windows 7 boxes at home to Linux over a year ago, and haven’t looked back. Funny thing is that I haven’t had a single update issue since upgrading. Makes me wish I’d stuck with Windows. Not.

Update issues with Windows 10: As far as I can remember the only issue I had with 10, is that it changes my default printer after updates. A minor annoyance. I have not had any major issues with 10 since I switched from Windows 7 and 8.

Are you still running Windows 7 or 8? Apparently you can still upgrade to 10 for free, under certain conditions. This free Windows 10 upgrade offer still works. Here's why -- and how to get it | ZDNet[^]

Slightly off topic I have just rebuilt a PC using the downloadable 'raw' Windows 10 ISO image. The rebuild was because the old disc was corrupt (user's AppData was linked to itself so could never find the end of folder chains) and I couldn't find anything that could recover it. Somehow the Windows 10 ISO image was able to find the original OEM licence on the corrupt disk and activated the new install automatically.

I believe that every Windows machine has a unique ID, that is not stored on the system disk. This ID gets registered with Microsoft the first time Windows 10 is activated. Subsequent rebuilds, including replacement of the disk, will not affect the activation status of Windows. I have always found that you can replace the system disk freely, and rebuild Windows, without losing your activation status.

A quick hint if you are still feeling recalcitrant. Make an image backup of your Windows 7 - (if you're running Windows 8 stop reading this and take up knitting). Follow the upgrade process. Don't bother signing up for a Microsoft Account if you don't have one. Run the Windows 10 for an hour or so Re-install your Windows 7 from the backup image. Your 'machine ID' is now known to Microsoft and you can do a clean install of Windows 10 from an ISO (or an in-place upgrade if you're daring) whenever you want. I have done this with several machines - no fuss, no serial requested.

Thanks. A warning though about that old laptop. There is no non-PAE version of Windows 10.

Note that Windows 10 is not compatible with some older machines. I also have a laptop that refused to run Windows 10 from the days when it first came out.

Windows 7 forever!!! :) Some of our PCs in the lab are running XP just fine. But they're sandboxed, not on the interwebs net.

Same here (Linux Mint). S-o-o-o straightforward. Windows 10 is MSFT's Project Hailstorm back with a vengeance. Where I live, freegeek.org refurbishes donated computers, and installs Linux. They make them affordable to a lot of people; notebooks for $100. And not-Win10 means good speed on a four-year-old PC.
