[Rockstar dev debate reopens: Hero programmers do exist, do all the work, do chat a lot – and do need love and attention from project leaders • The Register](https://www.theregister.co.uk/2020/01/24/developer\_heroes\_exist/) Didnt want to create account on the register to write a comment. The study looks it will lack the depth needed to distinguish between a main contributor and the so called hero developer. If a project has 30 contributors, over 2 years, but mainly contributed by 1 guy because he is doing it as his main side project putting in 10+ hours a week, then no dumb his stats are going to be high. The metrics being used might provide some insight, but not for what they are looking into. Time + Quality of Code = great developer Time + Quantity = developer that putting the time in. Quantity != Quality

just to screw things up: quality is what? bug-freeness? beauty of the UI? optimality of inner loops? .... quantity is? lines of code, number of modules?, depth of documentation? .... even time: 10 hours of about-as-good-as-a-junior code, or 5 hours of expert-level code? ... what about: - number of problems solved? - amount of [other peoples] bugs fixed (or found before release they happened)? - thoroughness of testing? - best at facing the customer? - the one that bought most of the coffees and danishes? - the one who oiled the squeaky wheels on the chairs? ... the one that cleaned up the most shit or made the least amount of it? some things can't be quantified, and even those that can are rarely comparable. anyway (from the comic books) we know that true hero's shun recognition, so best leave them alone otherwise they may become uncomfortable and fly off forever.

after many otherwise intelligent sounding suggestions that achieved nothing the nice folks at Technet said the only solution was to low level format my hard disk then reinstall my signature. Sadly, this still didn't fix the issue!

I agree with you, but - and this is maybe what Rockstar is looking for? - there's a "labor of love" element wherein the code is the primary idea of one person who is pouring blood sweat and tears out to bring this brilliant baby to life. And that happens a lot, and I'd say so often in these cases it's quality and quantity and the dev gets grey hair over it (but also satisfaction) and maybe that's who Rockstar is trying to pinpoint. I call it, Ownership! If I don't own it, I don't care about it at all. Other people making decisions, telling me what to do. Fine. Just type. But, if I Own It then I am making the decisions and making it work and insuring there are no bugs. Ownership! So few companies really understand that. Maybe it's impossible for a company to understand.:~

I think heroes exist in every profession. Mostly, because a lot of people don't really care about their work or are just very bad at it. If you like programming, learn some new tricks from time to time, and are a decent communicator with a good brain between your ears, you'll leave approximately 90% of the developers FAR behind you. How much code have you seen that does if if if if if (Christmas tree programming), has functions with 100's of lines of code or classes with 1000's, code that you just can't figure out no matter how much time you spend with it, or simply code that doesn't seem to be doing anything at all? If you've worked for different companies, my guess is that's the bulk of the code. Compare it to recruiters, most of them are like "Hi maze4, I've got a client near you in the Netherlands! We're looking for skilled Delphi developers and your profile stood out!" I mean, the bulk of recruiters don't even read your profile, spell your name wrong, or don't fill out obvious placeholders in default messages. Once in a while, a recruiter comes along who has obviously read your profile and makes you an offer you'd seriously consider. But that's probably 1 out of 99. The same goes for developers. And as far as I'm concerned, that's most of the working population. That's why support never seems to be helpful, they're just a bunch of bunglers, just like everyone else. How many good managers have you had? And what about unhelpful system administrators? Or someone from the business who changes specifications more often than socks. So maybe a "hero developer" is just a decent developer that looks like a hero in comparison :sigh:

Surely irrelevant, but is it just me, or is the article using "rock star" developer in the general sense, whereas you seem to be talking about Rockstar, as in, the developers of the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series...? (if I'm in that mindset, that's only because I've been playing a lot of GTA Online lately...I've finally discovered, after many years, that the Online component can actually be entertaining, if you manage to ignore the idiots who think the game is only about killing other players)...

I, for one, like Roman Numerals.
