imho, the frequent use of imho is an attempt to hide arrogance. imho, afaik is an attempt to hide belief that what you know is the only truth. imho, both imho and afaik are less serious offenses than using obscurantist protologisms like "acronymic netiquette." imho, the most distasteful techniques to engineer interest in a post by linguistic paradox are exhibited in this post. :wtf: p.s. since inappropriate sexual and scatological innuendo are so frequent in public forums, I do not mention them, here.

after many otherwise intelligent sounding suggestions that achieved nothing the nice folks at Technet said the only solution was to low level format my hard disk then reinstall my signature. Sadly, this still didn't fix the issue!

In other fora, if you make any statement whatsoever that is not an Indisputable Absolute Fact, you will immediately have three to five guys yelling at you: That is just your d*** opinion! Don't present it as a fact! Others may think differently! You have this yelling even if the context clearly indicates that the statement is a personal reaction or opinion. If I say that "J.S. Bach was the greatest composer of all times", any reasonably witted person would know that this is my opinion, not 100% neutral Fact. But in some fora, the statement is invalid. Whether I use imho or spell it out, "In my opinion, J.S.Bach was the greatest composer of all times", every opinion must be guarded this way. Not too long ago, I stated two opinions, in the same paragraph. The first one was guarded; for the second one, I didn't repeat the guard that started the paragraph. Yet I was attacked for presenting personal opinions as if they were facts. So, in some fora, the style is prefix any judgement, opinion or other reference to non-Absolute-Facts with ihmo or similar guard. But it variaes from one forum to the other.

This thread reminds me of when, while driving around with the kids, we used to play I-Spy. After a short while basic clues got too easy so we graduated to things like "PIFATSOTR". This, obviously, is for "pylon in field at the side of the road".

That's not unique to acronyms though. It's entirely possible to be arrogant while pretending to care about the other party in a fully-fledged sentence. Just like with any other form of speech, acronyms can be used for good or bad. Heck, one of the last times I spoke with my mather, she followed the usual "how to make sure the other side feels cared abut"-advice to the letter. Meaning she followed the form and form only.
